I have a fairly powerful desktop, and Im now getting a low end laptop (DELL). I will have the two computers connected to my wireless network. Now heres my question....

Can I somehow take advantage of my powerful desktop by controlling it wirelessly with the laptop??? For example I do alot of video editing, and it would be great if I could use the mobility of the laptop and power of the desktop for this.

    So guys is this possible?

Remote desktop (OS permitting), or *VNC, or Himachi (best to stick LAN-side)...still.....ngih....

Real VNC, but I dont know if it would be any good for doing video editing, it's a bit slow refreshing the page. Give it a shot, it's free. I use it for controlling my HTPC from other computer, its handy sotware to have.

    As the lads have mentioned
Remote desktop, part of windows XP -havent used it much myself, similiar to terminal services on win2k
VNC -and all it flavours: tightVNC / realVNC / ultraVNC etc.
Excellent pieces of software(not always free, but all have a free version)

as spartacus93 said, you loose a lot of quality over the VNC connection, VNC will deliver lesser colours and definition than you would get from running your powerful desktop on a 10 year old monitor
But it will let you see your desktop remotely, move your mouse about, start programs , open files etc. If you need to visually proof your video, you would need to sit at your desktop.

as an aside, you also need to have your computers networked, which would also involve some sort of wireless on your desktop/router/switch/AP side as well as your 'low end laptop (DELL)'

There is one more solution called Radmin I've seen recommended by some, it is a commercial app but it looks relatively easy to setup.

You should be able to configure VNC for almost lossless transmission over a decent connection (i.e. it can look lovely).

Remote desktop is the business though. Very good piece of kit.
