I couple of wood grain shots for comment please. I like the textures of bark and saw marks.

Blue toning really dosn't suit the first one, and the second one needs more definition!

I do loads of practise shots of branches, tree's etc. Handy subjects because of the amount of different light and compositions on one tree.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭EireRoadUser

    I like the first one.
Would love to see it with a saw resting on it with blood on the saw.

I do like the first one, so many years in that tree after looking at it for a bit :) well done.

    Why did you choose blue?

    second is over exposed..

Try different lighting. I agree with Shrimp, but he should have been more tactful.

na man, enough is enough, he's flooding so many crappy photos on here, and I can only be "nice" for so long. It needed to be said..

Why should I stop posting photographs Shrimp?

If you don't think they are worth posting that is fine by me. I am not familiar with your work. Do you post it here? I would be happy to comment on your photographs and I promise to treat your work with respect.

The door shot I really like. Iron on oak.

Has there been a poll on the subject? I am not aware of one.

joolsveer you keep posting alot of abstract photos which in my opinion don't work, and from what I have read alot of people think the same, but that does'nt mean you stop. I would recommend you read some books on compostion and lightening, the more you understand these basics the better your photos will be. Look at other peoples work on the sites such as photosig and the like, these will give you ideas to copy or improve upon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭joolsveer

I have had a quick look at the posting statistics

    Shrimp 4,674 6.52 per day
    me 504 0.29 per day

    These are the facts Shrimp.

Is there a committee who decide who is allowed to post to this forum? If so how should I put my case to them. I did not see any mention in the charter of restrictions on certain members.

It seems that it may be necessary to belong to an inner circle to be welcome to post here. Is membership open to all?

Please see charter extract below and tell me what part of it I am contravening?

    From Charter
    Do's and Dont's:

    Do

    * Post up your own work, or links to other artists work u've spotted on the web.

    * Disucuss methods / tools i.e Programs, Cameras, Tablets etc

    * Post up Questions or Advice

    * Post links to Intresting Sites / Articles / Compititions / Tutorials

    * Post Thoughts / Constructive Criticism on work submitted

    Dont

    * Post offensive / explicit pics

    * Post Anything releating to warez (pirate software) , or anything else illegal.

joolsveer, if a picture is worth posting everyone would like to see it, but you seem to point the camera and fire away like theirs no tommorow, with no real thought put into the photo, you need to work on your technique.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,154 ✭✭✭Oriel

This is like going into a gallery and saying to the artist "I don't like, take it down".
Say you don't like it, by all (polite) means, but don't ask them not to post it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭Benster

    Put the handbags away lads.

Jools - Create your own thread, say "My latest pics...". Post new ones into that as you take them. As normal, it will jump up on the thread list as you add stuff to it, as will other folks' comments. This will stop you getting accused of thread-flooding.

But keep posting by all means, otherwise what's the point of us looking here?

To those above, be constructive. Otherwise, STFU. Too many threads on this board get spoiled by petty bickering.

I vote Benster for Sheriff! keeper of the peace speaker of wise words.

Don't take it to heart Joolsverr. In a way you'd be better off not posting as many as you'd get more comments.....constructive comments that is. I think.

Too tempted not to reply so here goes....

A classic case of spamming this forum with new threads was your "Up the stairs" and "Down the stairs" topics... (excuse my english as my irish is not that good ;-) ,but you get the point). These photo's could have easily fit in one topic. Go with Benster's suggestions and use one thread to keep adding pictures to rather than opening 20 new ones in one week. And be more selective in what you post, you started the thread with only 2 pictures then suddenly added 5 more pictures of the same "quality" without any real explanation of those photo's what you were trying to achieve or show with them. If you're gonna post photo's tell something more about it then just a title like "shot of an old door" or "watch the grass grow".

I think someone deserves a long ban and I don't mean joolvers, theres absolutely no reason for such a bad attitude !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

Well it does make sense to just put your flicks in one thread instead of posting loads of threads. I'm not too keen on the abstract shots. I don't really see anything any good in them. But I still think you should post them so you can get feedback about what's good and what isn't. I don't think there's any reason to ban shrimp. Not that many people take offence to what he says. We all know what he's like.

Wow, now there's some artistic sportsmanship for you. Who are you to say if a photo's good or not? And who are you to say that nobody cares about a photo just because you don't like it? Jesus, if you don't like what he does, stop bloody well reading his threads. And if you don't like that he's posting so many threads, ask him to stop. No need to go insulting his photos while you're at it.
    Bad show, like.

I will have to reiterate what I said in relation to the number of Shrimp posts versus mine you have 4.6 posts per day against my .29. So what grounds of complaint have you? I would not be in favour of Shrimp being banned his posts were not as offensive as some others.

I see that Dimy has 2.53 posts per day. It will take a long time before I reach these dizzy heights like my detractors.

Yeah I would just say keep your pics a bit tidier, in one thread rather than a heap of them.

Those stats say nothing, you registered in july 2001 and probably been inactive for a long while or only posted here and there. If you could take the stats from just the last two months I'm pretty sure you beat me by a long shot... and please also make some stat of "threads created", I'm sure you beat me on that number too.... it's not the number of posts that irritate people, it's the numerous new topics you start with loads of bad photo's and a rare good one here and there. And that has nothing to do with treating with respect.... you've been photographing for many many years judging by your posts, so it's only fair that we expect some quality and not quantity from you and don't hold back to criticise bad shots. So far I've seen mostly quantity from you without quality. And please stop playing the victim role...we're the real victims here.... we have to see the crap you're posting!

    ...

My appologies, that last line was a bad joke without much respect :)

Jool, yeah I was a little harsh earlier, perhaps I should actually just focus on the fact that you love photography, even if you are not my taste, u still love it like i do! I'm sure you've read my last post in the cobble stones thread!

Thanks Shrimp for the change of heart but I hope it is only my photographs that are not to your taste. I have not yet read your post in the other thread.

As I have said before your age is less than one third of mine and you seem be still in school so I have no wish to treat you or your work with disrespect.

I see that you admit that you expect me to meet quality standards that are not being met by others. It would lead anyone to believe that there is a cosy clique operating.

I post my photographs to a number of other internet sites and I do not receive any abusive comments unlike the invective served up by boards members on this forum.

This is starting to make me even more nervous about opening up an account of Flickr or whatever one of those sites are .
I really wanted to build a collection on the net so I could have the link with my signature and hopefully if people liked them they would comment.

I don't now if such accounts cost anything as I don't use credit cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Good to know jools! I'll remember!

Eire, why dont you just set an account up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭EireRoadUser

I just thought you had to pay ,if they are free I'll go ahead.
I've a lot of photos I just want to put out on the net ,then i can think about them as people see them.
Don't know what it is ,but some shots I can't think clearly about until I know they are on view ,regardless of comments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭joolsveer

Does anyone know how many threads a week I am allowed to start. I read on another site that one thread a day per photo topic i.e. one landscape, one monochrome, one abstract etc. can be started per day. Can one of the moderators adjudicate please? Is this rule to be universal?

Jool, there's no limit, providing it's not like accessive. but you know like you don't want more than 2 going at the same time lets say.. so just post a thread maybe 2 times a week..

I have a free Flickr account and there is a limit to the bandwidth you can use. I have never reached the limit but then I only have about a 100 photos up. I have just had a look but I don't seem to have received any abusive comments from anyone there (even Dimy77 whoever he might be).
I prefer to host my photos on my own site and embed links in messages so I cannot be said to be using up precious bandwidth when I have several links in a thread.

What's that supposed to mean? I never posted "abusive comments" anywhere, not even here, to any of your photo's. I was merely pointing out how to improve on some shots with some simple adjustments in photoshop, even gave you an example, and yes...some photo's were just bad and didn't work imho as well as others, but then you made it clear you didn't want to hear my thoughts or my help as you were "oldschool" and me new.... fine with me, no more comments or help coming from me, but don't say I'm posting abusive comments! Imo you're feeling too "experienced" to learn or accept help from newcomers in photography like me.
Simple things like straighten a horizon in photoshop or adjust levels for better colors seem to be things you clearly haven't understood yet about digital photography as many of your photo's have a tilted horizon and bad colors, some pics even overexposed and beyond help even with photoshop (except if you shoot in RAW). But hey....don't listen to me, who am I eh?

(and now I'm expecting you to search for quotes from me..... *sigh*nevermind...I couldn't care less)
