    Hey all,

Thinking about building a new PC, primarily for gaming. I like new and shiny gizmos, but am wondering if going for the AMD 64 X2 cpus might be a little overboard considering my requirements - should I save myself some money and stay with the bog-standard AMD 64 cpus or is the X2 option a way to properly future proof?

Most games (not all) don't use dual core (yet). However for other uses like ripping, and such, the DC would be a nicer system to use. I don't think I'd pay the full price for top dog DC system yet. I'd get a low end DC model and overclock it.

    It depends on your budget.

When buying a processor, the law of diminishing returns generally applies, as the cost for each level of processing power goes up exponentially.

On Komplett the lowest AMD Dual core for Socket 939 is €380. That's a lot of of money and there's not really a whole lot that's going to be done with that in the near future.

For usual requirements, gaming, word processing & internet, anti-virus Single core is fine, though if you're doing stuff like Unreal/Hammer engine modelling, high end graphics work, video processing etc, it might be worth going DC.

It's a trade off between requirements and budget.

On komplett its €320 for a 3800+ X2 and €230 for a 3700+, well worth the €90 for DC IMO

I've got the X2 4400+ and it clocked from 2.2GHz to 2.6GHz on air using a zalman heatsink. Defo go dual core. Much nicer to work with when doing anything.
