I'm looking on ebay for a 50mm 1.8 and there are a few different types
    asi
    e
    d

i assume d means digital, could be way off, and also there made if different countries and at different times, i'm getting the vibes an old one in mint is better quality than a new one in mint, am i wrong?

What make(s) are the lenses? The Canon 50mm 1.8 I bought is very light and plasticky compared to older lenses but I am happy with the results it produces.

The one I bought is the 1.8D. D is digital alright. Some reviews did complain that it was made in China (the older being made in Japan) but personally I went down the new route. I like it. I feel more comfortable with the build than I would with the kit lens (never liked the zoom/focus bit that comes out from the front).

If you're looking at old ones be careful you don't pick up one that's incompatible (i.e. doesn't have the contacts so you can't meter etc) or one that's manual focus. I bought mine from a shop rather than e-bay so I couldn't advise anymore on that end.

Older models are generally more solid and have a bit more weight in them which is good if, like me, you like a hefty camera. One thing I do like about newer models is the ultrasonic focusing, where the exterior of the lens won't move if your focusing. Great when you're shooting off a wall...There's nothing worse than your camera spinning and the lens getting cought when your going to autofocus. Newer autofocus's are generally better too, though a lot of this is dependant on your camera.

What brand are the lens with D, E and ASI? I'm sure there's a guide on the manufacturers site.

D on Nikon lenes as in 50mm 1.8D means that the lens is supposed to be able to tell the camera what distance it's focused at as an aid to metering.

E was an old budget line of lenses Nikon brought out in the 80's - all manual

AI s is related to automatic diaphram, meaning that the camera/lens only closes the aperture diaphram when the shutter is pressed. The camera knows how much to press the aperture pin to get the selected aperture making it a little faster to operate.Description was only really used in the early days of these lenses.
Although all modern nikon lenses are AIs.Wouldn't worry about it !

The current 50/1.8 is fine, you'll get one new from Hong Kong on eBay for €100/110
