Ah bank holiday Mondays, possibly the most boring days ever!

Found a dead fly in the sitting room, and said what better for a macro shot!

Used a Canon 300D, Sigma 70-300mm lens (Mk1) on 5.6 aperture and 1/30 shutterspeed. Hand held.

i can see the effect u were going for, but i'm not sure if it works.. perhaps it's too dark, or the light is just not quite strong enough. there are some distracting elements.. however all in all some good technical ability shown!

I'd agree that the light wasn't strong enough. When taking the shot, I hadn't planned on the fly itself being so blacked out. I used 100 iso, going for near zero grain (knowing I'd have to crop the shot either ways), and compensating with the exposure time. Unfortunatly, my tripod is in Dublin, and on 300mm macro, it's pretty hard to keep steady at any more than 1/30!

    Thanks anyways Shrimp :)

    Thanks Mele!

    Any other C&C?

I think it works great. look at that DOF - talk about no margin for error. Incredible you got it without a tripod.

personally I would have cropped the fly to be left of centre.....but that's me.

    nice one.

I took about 19 shots, that's the stillest one! I have a few shots with the fly in different positions, but I think it looks at it's most isolated there!

    Thanks :)

    where is the fly now?

surprising how thin the area of focus is

He's quite possibly been hoovered up!

The macro setting on my 70-300 isset on 300, and has a VERY short depth of field, coupled with a fully open aperture, hence the narrow DOF!

A fly without wings is a walk ,a dead fly is a no fly zone :D
