I am getting really sick of reading threads where people take things totally off topic by pointing out someones spelling or grammar error. There is no point to it, I have no problem if the person wants to help someone by pointing out a spelling but when people say something like....

when you become able to spell ...... then you can advise on it etc etc.

Mean while their post is about as much use to everyone else as an ashtray on a motorbike. As most of these posts are said sarcastically or with a stupid smiley face at the end.

I have no problem someone pointing out a mistake but at but there is ways to do it nicely.

Asking for sources online is a good way to verify whether someone is talking absolute nonsense or not.
Incidentally, I wish people would realise that when I say "I'm sorry I can't read that with such horrible spelling and grammar" I DO ACTUALLY MEAN THAT LITERALLY.

I have no problem if the person wants to help someone by pointing out a spelling
    Fine by me so :)

They should take it to Spell Czechs.
Pointing out spelling mistakes in an argument takes credability away from you.

It's a method of trolling. It's really annoying, but it takes away from their argument, and makes them look like they haven't got a decent comeback. Well, that's for the spelling one, but I think it's fair enough to ask for sources, especially if the argument is technical.

I always think it's funny when you're expressing your opinion and someone asks for your sources.

Edit: It's funny that we three all said the same thing there!

No, knowledge and opinion are different. There's a difference between, "I think that girl is the most beautiful girl in the world" and "look, there's Miss World."

Try to "set" me up again?
    As Dubbya once said:

That thing is hilarious! I remember it well.

No, not trying to set you up, the extra f is part of the simpsons quote.

Not trying to ruin ur fun or anything lads but the thread is being brought OT.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,110 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

It has generally been answered. The person is either stupid and is making a cheap shot to try and salvage something when they can't make a counterpoint(Whilst making themselves look like an idiot.).
Otherwise, the post is genuinely unreadable.

I think DB wrote this thread because someone pulled him up by spelling "patent" as "patient".

It didn't make the post unreadable.

I know why he started his thread but he asked a general question, and not why did the person pull him up specifically. The 'patient' fiasco was idiotic and falls into case one.

You's are right it is why I started the thread, most decent members would overlook it, and I should probably just learn to ignore the others it just annoys me.

Fair enough, and I agree with you.
There's a time and place for pulling someone up on spelling/grammar. Single spelling errors are allowde in my book. ;)

An ashtray on a motorbike would be dead handy if it was parked outside a pub or something.

But if someone has really, really horrible spelling that is littered with txt speak... it's only common decency to let them know about it... It would be like letting someone walk around with really bad breath or BO and not telling them.
