Anyone see 2 moons???

I saw on another discussion board (another website) that someone saw 2 moons in the sky last night at around 3am:

They say:

Did anyone see 2 moons last night around 3am? Please tell me I'm not going mad, seriously- a neighbour was having a noisey party and woke me at that time and when I looked out there was a huge bright white moon and just to the right of it there was another moon (or something) kind of greyish in colour. I was a bit freaked out by it so woke my son and he saw it too. We live beside a main road and could hear traffic so someone must have seen it. Please someone tell me what it was as no one believes me!

Anyone???????

I would have guess venus too but she seemed to describe them as being nearly as big as each other, i thought it might have been some sort of optical illusion. ( lie when the moon goes big on the horizon, could venus be in position to be distorted at the same time?)

If you have double glazing and you are a bit doped out of it when you wake up late at night it can sometimes looks like there is two moons with the double panes of glass causing the illusion.

Double glazing can create even more than 2 at times. It is strange looking at it. Nothing like looking and the one and only though.

Earth does not have two moons.

It was stated here before, that it was Venus you saw. :rolleyes:

Maybe he is not posting from Earth.

Don't forget the partial eclipse tonight, peaking just before 8pm. The Umbra exit occurs just after 8:35, and there should still be some darkness up until about 10pm.

They are looking like they will be quite clear. They are mostly blue here in Dublin now. We've high pressure in the vicinity, so that is good.

I've seen thsi before....it's called a moon dog....it's an atmospheric phenomenon.

Given that it was a full moon the other night and it was in the SE of the sky, conditions were right for it to happen.
BTW the pic on the wiki isn't the correct one for this phenomenon...click on the "sun dog" link on that page to see what it should look like, but replace the sun with the moon.
Basically it's the mirror image of the moon reflected off a cloud that's at the right height and angle to reflect it.

In this case, it was a double-glazing reflection.
I actually read and responded to that post (it's not viewable on rollercoaster.ie any more - they don't seem to keep archives) when it was first posted and when I suggested the possibility of double glazing, the poster agreed that that was probably it.
I also heard on QI that the earth now has 5 moons, but apart from thee moon, the others are tiny.
