Compulsory Travel Insurance???

It's that time of year again where we're booking our hols.

I'm trying to decide where to go & getting some quotes & stuff off websites.

When you've to enter the passengers names & ages, there's always a tick box to say whether to include travel insurance or not for this person.

The particular travel agents terms & conditions (that you must agree to) states you MUST have travel insurance, whether it be your own or purchased from them.

What's to stop you from not having travel insurance & not purchasing from them?
Would make the holiday considerably cheaper.

Do they check? Or what's likely to happen in that case (apart from of course the obvious being you have an accident & your fcuked!!!)

I paid a lot for travel insurance a few years ago to travel to Oz.
While there I broke a tooth (which the insurance policy covered)
When I phoned them to claim, they said my account didn't exist, even though I had credit card receipts, polict documents & everything else, to prove that I did.
To this day I haven't received a penny from them, so you can understand why I'd rather not bother with travel insurance.

If your holidaying in Europe then get an E1-11 form from the tax office I think or maybe social office. That covers you for some accidents. Not too sure what exactly but I had it when I went to the canaries and was in an accident and it covered the ambulance cost and hospital fees, wass ages ago though so can't recall the details of it.

    Oh:-
The E111 scheme is not the equivalent of private health or travel insurance, however.

Would it be enough for me though, or what can the travel operators do to me?
I mean, can they force me to take out travel insurance?
Can they void my tickets if they find out I don't have travel insurance?
Do they ask for documentation of travel insurance?
    Can they check?

Cos, I mean, that E1-11 form would do me if I could get away with the rest

If I was to guess I would say its a get out clause of that travel agents. Most likely someone before sued them because they didn't have travel insurance.

If its in your contract that you have to get it and tried to sue them at a later time for cash they could tell you to feck off.

Incidently without travel insurance if something does happen it can get horribly expensive fast depending on what country you go to.

When I was going on holidays last year, I already had the multi-trip travel insurance independently. Anyway my friend was booking it through a travel agent and she had to ring me to find out who my insurance was with as they actually wanted the name of the insurer when I wasn't taking out their insurance.
