    hi,

Can someone tell me why a Raptor HDD is better than the rest out there - or maybe post a link.

    Thx.

faster better for games.normal hdd run at 7200rpm while these run at 10000rpm i think.

wow - I just looked at the prices - are they really worth the expense ??

Raid two serial ata drives together and forget raptors

The advantage being am disk big enough to fit games.

Its not drive rpm u need to worry about its read and seak times

Good review of the WD1500, in short if you want the fastest SATA drive money can buy the the Raptor is for you. You can of course go a cheaper route by setting up a RAID array but everything has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Storagereivew keep a good benchmark database as well thats worth checking out to see how some other drives perform.

Bit of a contardiction there. Seek times come down as rotational speed goes up. At least on aureal recording it does, parallel I cant say.

RAID 0 and RAID 1 have no advantage in seektimes as the heads generally have to be synced. In any case, most RAID offerings out there are "soft" RAID and consume CPU time as well a fact ofter overlooked.

Seek time is basically the amount of time it takes for a HD to get a a particular part of the drive. It is measured in milleseconds. This combined with the maximum throughput of the drive gives you an idea of the performance. Natuarally a RAID 0 setup with half decent drives will better the throughput of a given drive, but the limited seek time means that the effective throughput can be much less than the single 10K setup. Of course its great for benchmarking, but thats about it.

If you use a Raptor, or another 10k or above HD, generally the computer will be much more responsive, applications launch quicker, computer boots windows faster etc. This is true of RAID 0 setups too, but not to the same extent.

IMO the HD is often overlooked in terms of the apparent performance of a computer. Espcially with non cpu-intesive tasks. A P3 800 with 256Mb RAM and a quick HD, could easily trounce a much faster machine in terms of general responsiveness.

If you are curious about the raptor, pick up an older 36Gb on and try it. Only problem is that computers tend to look very slow from that day on!
