volunteer travel, advice please

    I really want to do some volunteer travel abroad after 6th year. Was looking at some of i-to-i packages,was wondering if anyones travellled with them and could give feedback? Really want to travel to South Africa and i-to-i seems great because would get good support in the country, but I don't like the idea of paying money to a business so I can volunteer with a chairty!
    Any other alternatives advice?
