Just a quick question. We cant purchase alcohol tomorrow, but is it a day of no drinking in the Religious sense in the same way we cant eat meat?

The Catholic church recognises Good Friday as a day of fast and abstinence. Alcohol would be included in the abstinence, unless it is the communion wine.

I understand that catholic church says that the communion wine isn't alcoholic wine at all, but Jesus' blood instead, so I presume that's why some think that it's not covered by the abstinence dogma.

I think a more accurate question to ask is "does church dogma prohibit alcohol, just as it prohibits eating meat?". To answer that, you'll have to ask your local priest for his understanding of the current rules + regulations, but it's certainly years since I heard of anybody taking the meat-on-fridays thing seriously. Anyhow, the Vatican's Code of Canon Law is quite specific on the topic of eating meat:

So, if you follow this, it looks like you're not allowed to eat meat at all on Friday of this week, but you're ok for beer, if you can find a pub that's open.
