You will need one when you are over there to get paid etc, but it shouldn't cost anything. Mine was free to setup over there and my GF's came as part of a package she got over here.

We were never once asked in the DIMA offices, at customs or at any other point for proof of money. That was last year, acually this week last year SOB!!!!!!

So will a banking 365 statement do?

I'm guessing that they're offering to set you up a bank account for a fee?
If you're working in Oz you will need an Oz bank account and I'm not sure how hard they are to set up as my original one was set up in 1986 and then my folx reorganised my banking a couple of years back to reduce my fees/earn me more interest (yay mum!).
You probably need to prove you have a minimum of something like €3000 in order to get an Australian visa (I so could be wrong about this, but this is approx what we need to be able to prove to get an Irish visa) and a bank statement is usually fine for this.
If it was me, I'd take along a copy of a recent bank statement showing this amount which I could show on arrival (if requested).

For further information give the Oz embassy a call or a travel agency a call.

Ya you need proof of AU$5000 which is about €3400.

The easiest way to do this is to set up a australian bank account and transfer the money to it and get a statement.

Im heading to aus and am doing this.

Don't bother until you go over there. You can set up a bank account free of charge, its pretty easy. In order to get the visa you do need proof of funds. A bank statement from an Irish bank is fine for this purpose. Thats what I used when i went i my working holiday visa. I don't know of anyone who was asked for proof of funds on entering Oz, only on application of the visa and thats regardless of having a one way or return plane ticket (i had a one way). However the just bring the bank statement with you to be safe and you'll be fine.

your supposed to have a bank statement with i think 5000 but most people are never asked for it. but there is always the chance you could be so jsut get an irish statment before you leave.

setting up a bank account here is simple no half as awkward as home.

anz bank at the moment have brought out a visa card that only works off your savings account. be very handy as you wont need to send money home to pay your credit card bill.
