Hi folks,im not sure how much of a deal this is exactly but i thought id mention it.
I only ever buy small items from pc world as everything else is so over priced but this morning while picking up some DVD-R in pc world Liffey Valley Dublin i noticed guys stacking a pallet of 19" Samsung LCD monitors.
The assistant said they are selling them for 250 euros, when i asked about response time off he went to get a spec sheet, when he returned he said 12 ms.
I have one of the 4ms Samsung LCDs and must say it is outstanding quality.
Maybe its a decent deal maybe not? either way i thought id mention it here.
They had 30 of these monitors @11:30 am this morning.

Hi, any chance of a model number and review link. Sounds link great value!

Is this available in all PC Worlds?

    Hi

I picked one up earlier - Its a silver frame/black base samsung syncmaster 193v. The buld quality and appearance is better than I expected to be honest.

It has quite a sharp viewing angle but the base is adjustable. There is a definite difference in playing a game like say HL2Lost coast on this one compared to one with a higher ms response time.

Havent read the manual yet but when you go into a full screen game it kicks in its auto - adjustment thingie then when you exit the game it doesnt auto re-adjust back if you know what I mean. You have to go over and hit the menu button yourself.

This could be fixable by reading the manual which I will probably do tomorrow. If its not fixable I will probably drop it back. Other than that niggle it seems fine. There is a stack of them on the way into pcworld liffey valley - not sure if all stores.

This seems to have a Response time: 25 ms. Which is slow for a gaming tft. That said my own is 20ms and I don't have a problem gaming with it. I'm tempted myself at that price.

The later model is on complete for €265 plus shipping, so its not that great a deal.

    Response time: 25 ms (typical)

Zoikes - That seems to be correct ! - I cant believe the staff at PC World would lie to anyone ? Say it aint so.

I cant understand that either to be honest - it does look a bit better - maybe the ms response time is an overall average or whatever.

Either way it does appear to be faster /smoother but I could be wrong. Its also less of a strain when reading from it when its about 3 /4 feet away.

    Response times are misleading.

    http://forums.hexus.net/archive/index.php/t-28409

I haven't had a problem with my own older 20ms (re: speed) and I would have thought I was a picky git.

Oh and personally I would believe nothing of PC World staff.

I have had the pleasure of overhearing them explain hyper-memory in video cards and then how the 'bios lies, you should trust device manager' there is probably a thread somewhere waiting to happen on all their clangers.

Would people recommend one of these? Looking to get one for my bedroom, nothing too fancy and I think the price range is OK. I would be hooking this up to my PS2 and getting Sky Digital connected to it.

    Thanks

    It's not a TV. Just a monitor.

LOL. Lots of TFT TV's around its an easy mistake to make. Many people are using their widescreen TFT montiors as TVs, hooked up to a PC with a tuner, or even a dedicated media PC.

Oh right, well I'm after a similar sized flatscreen for my room. Would I be looking to pay more than that? Suppose I should get one of these HD ready ones?

Something like this you need to be looking for.
    17" - http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=315384
    19" - http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=309629
These also double as a PC monitor.
Don't worry about HD unless you're going well over 30".

Not to go off topic - does anyone know when tv signals are going to hd only ?

I know the world cup is the big intro for it but when is it going to reach the point of hd majority (channels/programs) - old standard minority (channels/programs) .

PS if you want to use an xbox pretty sure you need hdtv to show it off at its best.

The BBC are due to broadcast world cup matches in HD but I don't think it's a permanent switch over to HD. I can't see them going to HD proper until the whole of the UK have gone digital (2008 I think). Sky do a few channels atm for an extra sub and a HD digibox.
You need a full HD setup to see the benifits (ie. HDTV, HD recorder, HD set top box etc).
Thats my understanding of it but I could be way off the mark.:)

I think Kaizer is right... we just got a HD TV and a HD DVD player and the difference is amazing! In the old DVD films that we had you can actually see natural rain! (Which mightn't sound amazing but as movie people tell me normally people can only spot artifical rain in films).

They also have this 19" Samsung LCD tv on sale for €479 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=315390 . Imo it's great value, the response time is 8ms contrast is 700:1, max res 1440*900 and its only €20 more than Komplett excluding delivery

Edited as i made a mistake about the model

Noelie, just to clarify how much did you pay for the above?

This thread is about 19" Samsungs for €250 in PC World. Your posting has me a little confused. If this is the monitor PC World are selling at €250 its a steal. If you paid €479 for the attached link then its a different subject matter.

    Thanks Lawdie

Were you watching a HD DVD? Or just a normal one upscaled? Progressive scan or not.

i used to work for the company, in several capacities, and was indeed management at one time. We used to have some great staff, who really knew their stuff, but we always had a few that didn't have a clue, and its not exactly easy to get rid of em!

THings have changed now big time though. I nearly died a few weeks ago. Went in to pick up a few bits for a mate and it was disasterous

Sorry dude - wasnt trying to say that they were all clueless - I am just going by my experiences. I think in fairness its probably luck of the draw.

I've been very unlucky so. To be honest I don't ask for advice. Its just the drivel I've heard them tell other customers.

Don't be fooled by this. They were selling that model for €449 just over a week ago. I went to buy it and found the price had gone up to €479. I queried them on it but they gave me the usual nonsense. Don't be surpised to see it in a sale in about - oh - 20ish days with €30 off. You can get it delivered on pixmania for €450

I think I'll pass and (eventually) get something with a better response time, or widescreen.
