nope, he really is that evil looking......

general raw conversion stuff, no filters or anything. I burned the background to add extra emphasis on his expression. A bit sloppy I know.

very nice shot of your horse...

eas, yours looks heavily airbrushed, no doubt neatimage was the software of choice? Perhaps it was a bit over done! And perhaps crop of the left hand, for a photo which such good eye contact, you want to emphasise that and get a nice tight crop.

yep, neatimage was used. I know you use it too as I've noticed the same effect of some of your shots. It may be a touch overdone. I would have noted this myself when producing the photo, and decided that it added a somewhat cinematic/dramatic appeal to the shot that suited. Debatable and probably boils down to personal tastes whether others think the same.

As far as the crop goes - this is a shot of my son clawing his way out of the bathtub. The hand in hand sensitivity is the foil to his agression. The hands are needed to emphasise the story of the photo. I took steps and burned out some of the detail to in this area so the was no distraction from the powerful expression. Also, I rarely crop limbs off at joints or close to main intersections unless I'm intentionally trying to convey a message.

I think a photographer of your creative ability should be able to look into photographs and see these things rather than critiquing them against a checklist of rules as you seem to do quite often.

Like I said in previous post if anything I'd change in this is the sloppy job I did burning the background. I may dig out the original and redo it.

thanks for the comments - do you have a fav. portrait to post?

thanks melekalikimaka - I don't have the original a the moment..I'll try and dig it out over the weekend and post it on Tuesday.

If your looking for before and after samples of neat image, I'm sure a search on google will help....or PM me and I can give you a few. Alternatively, the basic Neat image package is free give it a go. http://www.neatimage.com/

Love the pic. The hands are vital to the composition IMHO.

Ok, you are coming across like I offened you, did I? Perhaps I touched a raw nerve, after all the photo is of your son, so it would mean more to you thn me. I was purely giving a critique on composition and editing. Not the sentimantal value of the photo.

As for a photo, well I think I've only got one portrait photo. The one I won the Portrait Comp with :p Well I got some of buskers...

    Indeed. Great shot.

As for my own, it's not my favorite but certainly one of my most memorable. Shot from hip at blog awards after a few pints. Completely missed the focus and the orientation but have no intention on processing it further. Very little processing done on it actually. It's done it's job already. Aside from that, I like the roughness of it. It's not a perfect shot, boo hoo.

(ok, so it's probably technically half candid half portrait.)

Actually, I find that some portraits can look quite good when the subject is out of focus and the background is quite sharp, it brings a new element into your standard portrait!

Shrimp - I guarantee you did not offend me. My reply was in reply to your critique on composition and editing. Had nothing to do with the sentimental value of the photo.

Are you offended that you did not offend me?

Nice shot Outcast, the wrinkles could do with a tiny bit more contrast though, bring them out a bit more. Great bokeh in the background.
