    Couple of silly questions gentlemen:

    1. Is it normal for your ears to hurt after a BJJ rolling session? I know they get cauliflowered eventually but thats after years of it surely.

    2. How do you explain what BJJ is to the lads in the pub without it sounding like a hot oil session?

    Bah!

    1. Ears are sensitive
    2. I don't think its possible to explain any martial art without it sounding a little bit....well, gay.
It doesn't help that BJJ is pretty focused on mounting your opponent.

Your ears hurt because they're weird, basically. It should subside after a while. If you get Cauliflower ears, post here and I'll tell you how to treat them without the pain of the needle (Still shudder when I think of that)

"When you think about it lads, everyone grabs the toehr guy in a fight, and usually they end up on the ground. We learn how to handle that, and then we learn how to snap bones, it's really cool."

    That or

"You the Ultimate Fighting Championships? I train in that!"

Usually those two are the most impressive ways of describing it.

Yeah but that would mean missing out on all the potential gay jokes.

lol, funniest thing Ive read here in ages.

I remember when I first did judo looking at some of the practise chokes (where you are on your knees in between the other guys legs) and thinking that it looked a bit sexual, but after a few lessons you get used to it and stop thinking like that.

whats worse is when your actually thinking of sweeps and mounting, taking the back when your sh$£"%ing, every time i hug someone i get the underhooks:rolleyes:

    2 Quick Things.

    Chicks dig cauliflower ears.

Saying like Judo is cool and all, but John you forget if you're down the pub, you have to brag. Talk about training camps in Iran where you pull the arms of dissidents.

Okay, I want to emphasise I do NOT look for sweeps when I'm sh@gging, but I always get underhooks in a hug, or as I now call them, a friend clinch...:D

As for Coli ears, I think you avoid them a little when you do no-Gi. When I used to grapple guys in Gi's all the time, my ears would frickin kill me. At one stage I was even considering getting some Star Wars "gold leader" ear guards.

I found 2 interesting things about Coli ears.

1/ Not a whole lot of people "warm" them up. This is a good lesson we can learn from Wrestling or what ever. Rub your ears and face fairly vigorusly before training, massage the ears blah blah blah

2/ I only get them when I've been training in UCD or somewhere I get to have a hot shower right after training.

    Peace

Hmm those ear guards look a bit crazy. I think I'll put up with the discomfort.

"a bit like Judo" is a fine way to explain the old BJJ to friends and family. Why didn't I think of that.
