I was in the Phoenix Park today and took some shots in the Furry Glen. I wanted to get the lake with some ducks on it but because of my shutter speed of 1/6 of a second the ducks are all streaky. Any advice please?

1/6 of a second is a relatively long exposure. You don't mention what equipment your using. If you are using a digital camera you might be able to adjust the ISO to a higher value which will allow you use a faster shutter speed like maybe 1/250 or 1/500.

You might also be able to open the aperture up further but this will affect the depth of field which means that more of your picture may be out of focus.

I'm not sure why you used 1/6 of a second for that shot. Do you know what f-stop/aperture you used?

I used 100 ASA speed and F22 aperture because I wanted to get as much depth of field as I could. The camera automatically selected the shutter speed.
To be honest I only noticed after I looked up the details of the shot on my PC.

That second photo - with the blurred ducks - why would you worry about maximum DOF? I'd use a larger aperture, short shutter speed & focus as much as possible on the ducks themselves, if I was going to zoom in that closely.

OK...it's a crop of the first image...didn't notice it straight away. Still, with a higher ISO setting you should be able to overcome the problem of a slow shutter speed. Why not try a few different aperture settings anyway (f/11 with a shorter shutter speed) and see what it gives you?

Thanks Shrimp for your honesty. I probably have a sentimental attachment to this particular scene because my mother (born in 1924) always had too. I have some more shots that I took in the vicinity today that I will add for your comments.

I cannot be objective about photos of places that I like. I'm sure that I'm not alone in this. I apologise if I was a little cheeky to you in another post.

Hey joolsveer, are you a paddler or were you at WWKC just by chance?

No I'm not. I just noticed the bit of kayak in the tree when I was walking by and investigated. Why is it there by the way?
