i think thats an MBR problem, but usually windows will re-write the mbr when its installed(or reinstalled), are u farmiliar with the recovery console?

I am a little familiar with the recovery console. What commands should I be using in the recovery console to reinstall it?

    Thanks

Hi my PC refused to boot yesterday ntldr error message and no further progress :(

Had some digital photos and general crap I needed.

Recovery console and fixmbr and fixboot did fe[k all for me.

    - fixmbr said my mbr seemed non-standard and that it was going to fix some errors. - no result though.

Best bet is to get any spare crappy hard drive - borrow temporarily if need be.

Do a quick install of XP on it, copy all your invaluable data over from your corrupt drive and then do a fresh install of XP on original one. - People seem to prefer to pull their own eyes out rathar than to reinstall their OS - fact of the matter is that a good rebuild takes 45-60mins and your PC will be fresh, airtight and quick as fu[k. + It practically does itself - just check it every 20mins and press next or enter....

P.S. I wonder if theres some new boot sector virus in the ether? Have heard of a few of these in the past week or two......

I have tried to reinstall XP on it and it keels over half way through the installation asking for a reboot of the pc, then I get as far as the NTLDR is missing or currupt message.

Sounds like a corrupt file system to me,
    Run

    chkdsk /r

    at the recovery console.

You dont have a floppy disk in the drive do you? That comes up when you have a disk in and try and boot a W2K or XP machine.

IF you have a external harddrive, like a mp3 player or camera connected through this can come up. Unplug all the usb leads that you dont need.

You would get it also if someone had been meddling with your boot order in the BIOS so make sure theres nothing odd going on there.

Ipod used to stop my PC booting allright so check USB ports as per Krazy_8s suggestion.
