I want to start something big - anyone with me? =)

    yo =)

    I want to start something a little special but let me first explain my motivation for doing this!

    Having been massively into ska punk (and lots of similar genres) a few years ago I recently decided to take a break from the Sigur Rós, world music and Radiohead that dominated my collection to rediscover why i loved bands like [spunge] (who were my favourite band a couple of years ago), Mad Caddies, Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish so much. aaand I'm pleased to say I'm loving every minute of it - my old favourite bands have found their way back into my tastes and ska punk is now a genre I love again! Listening to it again made me realize just how many of the great times I had when i was younger I owe to ska punk, and how much of my personality I owe to it as well. I am quite optimistic and determined by nature even when things are hard, and I think a lot of this is due to the kind of music I listened to in my teens.

    But I was seriously shocked when I looked into it further and saw how much of it had disappeared in the time I spent not listening to it! I assumed that ska punk (and the other happy punk music that went with it) was still healthy and all was good and well I had just personally gone off of it for a while. Yes I saw my (younger) sister's friends and most people i know around 17 turning into depressed emos but i assumed it was an isolated (and very unfortunate) incident. What happened to happy punk and that great spirit you're supposed to have when you're young? This sucks people... and emos suck too!

    I couldn't believe it when I heard some of Less Than Jake's new stuff - what's going on? I hate to say it but their new album sounds... well... emo. Thank god bands like [spunge] and RBF have stuck to their roots and continued doing what they love - my respect for them has grown =)

    I for one am very confused by this musical shift. I have no desire to dice my wrists apart with razor blades and would much rather crowd surf at an outdoor ska festival on a hot, sunny day. Is that so weird? =\ Emo and similar music has screwed up a generation of kids and has probably caused hundreds of suicides. It isn't right =(

    So, with my little introduction out of the way and "One More Go" by [spunge] playing on my media player, here's what we're gonna do...

    I want everyone who is interested in helping ska and happy punk (and similar optimistic music) make a comeback to email me at darksmiley_ver2@yahoo.co.uk and I will keep track of every person who has shown interest together with contact details (email address is fine). Let's see what can be achieved with enough support!

    I will start a group somewhere or maybe a website, and it is my hope that if we get enough determined people working together, we can come up with something that will help bands like [spunge] fight back! I for one would not forgive myself if I just sat back and watched as some of my favourite bands slowly faded away. Off the top of my head I am thinking about some kind of massive festival or advertising campaign, but the purpose of leaving it open for discussion is to get lots of heads working on this and to do it in the best possible way. We don't need cash, we need sheer numbers of people to pull something fantastic off.

    Ok guys I look forward to hearing from you! Take it easy,

    Mike =)

    I prefer the earlier ska bands, but yeah it's good to see some one trying to make the genre good again.

    I was kind of referring to The Skatalites and The Stranglers but I spose it also refers to the 80's ska bands like Op Ivy.

    I can't stand nowadays ska, it just has a way over the top manufactured pop sound.

    Common Rider are great though.

    That's what happens when you take your orders from MTV.

    Emo is the industry's attempt to connect with the youth and its feelings of discontent, and to profit from this supposed relationship.

    For anyone who likes ska/dub influenced punk, try listening to bands like the Filaments, Suicide Bid, Capdown, Morning Glory, all real positive bands, and bleedin shnannimalanall

    Couldn't agree more with the bands above and throw a bit of Inner terrestrials in there for an even better mix

    Pat Mello.

    He was more a roadie, didn't do much in the band.

    He played in a lot of their songs and the band considered him a "fifth member".

    I apologise. I meant Matt...eep bit of a boo boo there. I like Capdown too.

    I can't remember the last ska punk thread :D

    and sorry anarcho, i thought you were refering to ska punk, not ska, i love the skatalites, anyone see em when they came a few months ago, they were great

    ska punk is pretty dismal...everythings about love or smoking weed, best ska punk band i listen to is mouthwash, thier album is fantastic, meaningful, thought inspiring lyrics not 'i want your girlfriend to be my girlfriend' oh and to the original poster, if you want some good ska punk let me be the first to suggest burning your reel big fish cds and buying some leftover crack or better yet, **** ska punk and listen to the slackers or hepcat, roots ska > two tone > ska punk

    also, i find it depressing that some people dont like op ivy...gotta wonder if thats because meaningless lyrics = happy, carefree music in thier minds

    Two tone is ska punk ya fooooool.

    Ha! I always thought two tone and ska punk were one and the same. And that bands like The Stranglers etc were only refered to as Second wave.:)
