Anyone here do, or have studied, any Classical Martial Arts? I think these are rare enough in Ireland so maybe not. I'm talking about Bujutsu Ryuha or perhaps some non-Japanese combatitives that also come from a lineage type tradition.

Here's a lenghty essay on Ryuha in case anyones's interested.

Studied Kaze Arashi Ryu Aiki Jujutsu in Waterford for about 18 months under Tony Deedy (who was permitted to teach in Ireland by Sensei Kirby Watson in th UK).

Alas, the group folded 4 years ago due to small regular numbers......

    Interesting essay.

What makes a martial arts classical?

I did Shotokan for a few years before I did any Knepo. It was tough training.

    Cheers,

    Bagg.

(Sorry to hear you're studies couldn't continue.)

CMA? Well I think that essay explains it well enough!

I have already met you there then! I was at a seminar Tony hosted with one of the lads who came over to grade him? Myself and an old friend of Tonys' from his TKD days, Jerome, spent the day up there getting arm barred and playing with sticks :D That was the last time I met Danny Kett as well, he used to train in TKD and boxing here in Dungarvan. I remember seeing you up in Tramore at the HKD as well! I only got to a couple of classes under Mr. Sullivan before new house and baby put the dampers on training for a while :) Nice to "meet" you again!

Yep, I was there. Those seminars weren't up to much I'm afriad as there was too much for new people to take on board and David, the guy that came over from the UK, tended to have little patience when it came to explaining the basics to Non-KAR folk !

Danny was a long time regular (had been with Tony for years before I joined) but had to leave due to family pressures on time.

Well, there's a lot of new members since then, some of whom are more interested in this stuff so...

And who is anyone on this forum to talk about repeated topics!

Yiikes - I found the thread pma was talking about
    dated end of 2004!

It turned into 8 pages of the same old same old TMA vs MMA. :o
We could have a CMA vs TMA Vs MMA 3-way debate-athon, but lets not! Any more CMAers out there?

WHat makes a martial art classical?

If you go by depth back into history or lineage Kung Fu will trump everything except greco-Roman stuff? So surely you dont mean that?

CLassical as in, from a "Classical Period" in Japan's history? THat would be "classical japanese martial arts" no?

    Peace
