Little point spending money on the 6800GS as the cheaper 7600GT is about on par with it performance wise. So you save a bit of cash for something else.

Dont bother buying an SLI motherboard unless you really plan to down the road though I can understand if he wants the option.

I don't think going with a Pentium D is a good choice for a gaming PC get an Athlon 64 or Athlon 64 X2, it's not only cheaper but better suited to games as well.

    Graphics €204 euro
    CPU €160
    Motherboard €71
    1GB RAM €91

For €526 you will get a system that will deliver the same performance as the €886 total cost of components you listed.

Thanks guys for your assistance. I'm not going to rush into anything yet until I have reviewed all my options (which could take years in my case).

As the project PC will be used in a home office, I would be looking at not only a gaming PC, but also it would be used for video editing and CAD.

Your continued input into this project would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks OKEE for posting the origional message.

An Athlon 64 3200+ or Athlon 64 X2 3800+ would still be an overall better choice than a Pentium D for gaming, video editing and CAD thrown into the mix.

I got a enw PC recently, and its pretty sweet.

    Specs:
Case: Silverstone Sugo SG01, M-ATX, Brushed Aluminium.
    Power: Seasonic S12 430W Silent ATX2.0
Board: MSI K8NGM2-IL, M-ATX, Nvidia 6200 vga, 7.1 Intel High Def Audio.
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHz
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS7700-CU Ultra-Quiet CPU
Memory: Corsair 2048MB Kit w/two matched
GFX Capd: Gainward GeForce 7800GT 512MB,1,4ns DDR3 ,PCI-Express, Dual DVI, Svideo in/out ::: (Zalman VF900-CU Quiet Copper VGA Cooler)
    HD: 74G Raptor X 2 (Software RAID1 in gentoo)
Akasa AK-182-L2B Ultra Quiet 80mm Fan
DVD: NEC 16X Dual layer / silver front
    NetGear WG311T

now if you are running windows, you can use the hardware raid on the board, also the netgear windows drivers are dodgy, it works brilliantly in linux however, so I'm happy, so get a different network card if you are running a windows only install. The card dows work in windows you just need to fiddly with it a bit.

My budget is in the region of €1500, and possibly more if I get those nixers.

My old system was a PB iMedia (5051?) runing Win Me, which I have left very close to the skip at the moment.

I will be retaining the DVD ROM, Floppy drive and monitor from the old pc (for the moment), so that will allocate funds elsewhere.

I'm hoping to have the system up and running by mid May.

    Zed
