New driver - Which shaft?

I'm probably gonna splash out on a new driver soon so I went to Mc.Guirks at Celbridge driving range to try some. Had a go of the TM R5 and the Ping G5. Horses for courses I know but I found the R5 very hard to hit well, consistently. In contrast, the Ping seemed to just want to fly every time. The only way I hit a bad shot with it was doing silly things, really trying to murder the ball!

So it looks like Ping will get my money. Now the next problem.

For the same price I can have either the standard shaft, an Aldila shaft or a Graffalloy blue shaft. In my choice of flex obviously. The club I tried had the standard shaft. Obviously I don't expect them to have every shaft/flex/loft combo available for demo so do I buy the club I was happy with on the range or go for a name brand shaft? Is there much difference in the hands of a 22 handicapper or will it even make it more desirable come selling or trade in time?

My advice would be to buy the shaft that you demo'd and were happy with... other than that, get yourself measured.. I tried an R5 with a stiff shaft there, and was happy with that, so i bought exactly what i was happy with.. the joys of try before you buy :D

I was back there today and had a feel of the other two shafts in the shop, without hitting them, and they seem considerably stiffer than the Ping shaft so I bought what worked for me. Probably stands to reason that if they're not charging extra for the name brand shafts then their own one must be decent quality and equally expensive.

Off to the Heritage for the weekend and have a round booked for Saturday morning - Time to unleash the beast!

    Thanks for the reply.

Hi milltown i just saw ur post u made the right choice, fair play, a brand shaft is of no use if u cant hit it well.
