    also will work for websites

    eg. tracert boards.ie
    .... tracert wikipedia.org

If you have a limited account and the command prompt is disabled for you then go to http://www.dnsstuff.com/

Of course bear in mind that it will only get you at most the exchange that the user is connected to. You will not be able to get street location information, so thinking you can find them and then call around is out of the question.

I did that and I can't get any further information.

I tried another one I.P. address and I seem to get the same results.

What can I do to find out more and what do I do with the information that the tracert gives me?

Sorry for being simple on this subject

    Oh right i get you

I don't really want to call round to them. They left an unsavoury message on a local club board and it is reckoned that they did this and left a fake name. We believe it is fake name but we feel it is someone from the club so we need to find a name and talk to this person so it doesn't happen again.

Tracert is giving you the path that your connection takes to get from your machine to the one you are connecting to. That is all. You would also be able to use some DNS resolution to be able to get an URL for the machine, and a general location for where the IP is located, but thats all.

Yeah, you're not going to get much that will help you. Pretty much all you can do is keep an eye on that IP, see if any regular users use it.

Just looking for a name associated with the I.P. address but if the forum is only showing the exchange that the I.P. address is coming from then there isn't much further i can go is there?

Need a name because we believe we know the person leaving nasty messages on our forum

No. If you felt like talking to the ISP, feel free, but don't expect much.

If you know what exchange the message was left from, have a look and see what other regular users also connect through that exchange by tracing other IP addresses too. It might come up with a short list, or if it's a very local club then maybe everyone uses it so it won't be of much help.

If you think you know who it is anyway, and they're not knowledgeable of technical stuff, then you could always bluff and say you can trace them and warn them not to do it again. This might work.

Erm, if you know the IP, is it possible to search somewhere for all the IP addresses that visted your site, as they may have used that IP before (eg: it may be a work IP).
