    Hi,
about to get back into the game.
My driving was not too bad and my putting is ok but I am focusing on getting a good set of irons to have for a while.

Anyone got any recommendatios based on use ?

Also are there any shops/clubs in Dublin where you can try as you buy (Driving range) ?

I know there are tour vans coming up but they are only Nike/MacGregor as far as I know.

    Thanks in advance.

I got some MacGregor Vip Forged irons last year..really nice feel for the mid handicapper...driving ranges sould have most of the standard irons for testing...

I bought mine on ebay from the states and saved 200 quid even after duty and VAT...personally I don;t think there is much of a difference between most decent irons...(callaway a bit overpriced imo) just find a set you like and buy them on the net...

www.direct-golf.co.uk is a good site also...

Get a set with a gud size cavity back on it( make sure they have plenty of forgiveness). Dont buy of the net unless u have hit the same spec irons(ie same shaft, lie, grip thickness) a mid handicap needs forgiveness more than feel, however if it looks like a shovel dont buy it u have to enjoy looking down on those sticks as well:D

is the Cobra SSi's. The value for the club is outstanding. I recommend having them regripped when you get them to a better quality grip as the factory grip is not the best. You will be well please with evey aspect of their play.

What handicap did you have before? What's your average round?

There's no use in recommending a set of cavity backs to someone who used to play off 2!!

I hear Golfworks in Spawell will fit clubs for you, also McGuriks in Celbridge are good, you can hit before you buy in both places

What are you expecting from the irons? Forgiveness? Spin? Control? More info needed, otherwise you'll get a gazillion 'buy this' kinda posts..

Went to Golfworks last evenin and purchased some Wilsons.
Went to the range for an hour and I was plesently surprised, although I have the same failings with certain clubs.

    I'm hitting a 5 Wood around 210 and a Driver around 215 (average).
Would anyone have any explainations for this other than a mental thing seeing the loft of the 5 wood ???

It all depends on your swing.. i find that i have to hit my driver on the upswing of my swing, whereas i can hit the fairway wood on the downswing if i want. If i do that with the driver it goes nowhere, relatively speaking.. but thats me, hard to tell what you're doing without seeing it!

    I know what you mean.
I tend to hit both at the bottom of my downswing.
The 5 wood is fine because of the loft but you could be right that using the driver like that could hinder me as I address the ball with no space between club and ball.

Will give it a lash over the weekend, cheers.

    I'm not a pro, but....

Don't worry about space between club and ball. If you want to hit it on the upswing just position the ball off your left heel (assuming you are righthanded.)

    Got it sussed now.
Changed the backswing to keep my upper body as rigid as possible.
Keeps my through swing straighter as i'm not coming around the ball in an arc.

Now to take it to the course..........
