Wiring network point > 100 meters. Options?

    Hi Folks,

I need to wire a network point that is greater than the maximum distance for Cat 5e/6 of 100 meters. The distance is probably going to be about 250-400 meters.

Daisy chaining hubs along the route is not really an option, as that would require power at each hub. So I am looking for alternative options. Wireless isn’t an option, as the network point will be serving a wireless access point.

Does anyone have any experience with Multimode fiber? I presume it would require a special switch at both ends to convert back to Ethernet?

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks. :)

it could easily be done with fibre, but things might get expensive. you will have to get someone who is trained to handle fibre. it would appear to be the best option as you've more or less ruled out wireless and daisy chaining repeaters

    Hi,

It may be possible to use 10BASE5 coax cables, they could work at 500meters. It would mean that you only get 10speed network though.
