What is that new concrete tower currently under construction near Ballymun. It lookes like the base for a water tower or else a base for Air Traffic Control?

    Any ideas?

It's a water tower for the north fringe water project. Has been discussed here before.

The North Fringe Water Supply Scheme

This scheme involves the construction of 36km of watermains, a major ground level reservoir and high-level water tower at Sillogue. This scheme will improve water supply and water pressure in the North City and South Fingal area. Construction started in 2004 with overall completion expected in 2006.

    Need for the Project:
The North and North Eastern areas of Dublin City together with South Fingal, Baldoyle, Sutton and Howth have experienced poor water service for many years. In addition, the anticipated growth in development requires significant water supply infrastructure. The Project will also create a new trunk ‘Ring Main’ connecting the network from different sources.

    Funding:
The overall NFWSS is estimated to cost €55 million and is funded by the National Development Plan, Dublin City Council and Fingal County Council.

    Progress to Date:
Construction of certain sections of the Watermain started in 2004 and these are substantially complete i.e. the pipeline from Cappagh Cross to Ballymun which is 9km long and the pipeline from Swords Road to Baldoyle which is 13.3km long.

    Work in Progress:
The Construction of the Water Tower and Reservoir, adjacent to the M50 at Sillogue, Ballymun, (see photo) commenced in July 2005 with an expected completion date of December 2006. The construction of the North City Arterial Watermain (Coast Road, Fairview to Baldoyle) is at Final Design Stage and is due to start in 2006.
