    hi,

i need someone to design a sleeve for an upcoming EP for an indie/alterative rock band.

was thinking along the lines of a student doing it for part of a portfolio or whatever.

    thanks.

Anything you can give us to go on? Style? Type of band? Things to avoid? As much as you feel you can give us up front will save you sifting through all the completely unsuitable responses later - and save us working on unsuitable proposals. Even "no ideas" would give us all a lead.

was just looking for interest before we get fancy.

anyone who wanted to do it could more or less be free to do whatever they feel reflects the style and genre.

    theres no real theme/subject matter.

    so basically go mad.

the only thing is i'd like it to be original and eye catching.

Well Im not a student, but I would be interested. I will reccomend you create a brief. It should outline the elements You REQUIRE

Here is an example of a logo brief for a company.
    # Logos must contain the words "Stein Engineers, Inc.". This is not cAsE SeNsItIvE. Optionally, you may replace "Inc." with "Incorporated".
    # The logo can contain up to 3 colors. A black and white version would increase your chances with the client.
    # Entries may not contain gradients.
    # The logo style must be business professional with a modern twist.
    # Your logo should represent innovation, responsibility, professionalism and strength.
    # Any font may be used. Please upload your font with the entry.
    # The client requires the logo in a Illustrator vector file (.ai or .eps).

    This was the winner.

    [line]1000[/line]

If I may be so bold as to suggest some rough guidelines and examples.
    • The entry should contain The name [Band's Name] located on the front and sleve
    • The EP title should be located on the front and sleve
    • The font used for the band name should be [random font] this is avilable here.
    • The band feel that rocket powered space monkeys best describes the feel of this album, this is only a suggestion and all entrys will be considered regadless of monkey content.
    • Two formats are required one for slim line cds and another for a DVD edition.
    • The design should evoke such bands as [band] in paticular their [white album]
    • The final image should be at 300 DPI

These are just suggestions but I think you get the Idea, this won't take long, but it will ensure a better range of results.

Plus, and this is the most important part, set a date for completion, with 1-2 interval review dates if you want otherwise you will get nothing.

    excellent advice.

    ok, here we go.....

first of all, its not an entire album, more like a few tracks to give out at gigs, give to record companies ect.
there will be however quite a large volume made.

The design should contain The name [Invocation] located on the front and sleve.

The name of the EP is Invocation so additional text is not required on the front.

I have no specific font in mind.

3 definate songs on th EP are called; "Acquainted with you","A promise made", and "What I should have said"
We have no recordings of these songs as yet but hopefully you can get a vibe off them.

we'd be cool with anyone coming to a session to hear the tracks ect.

the genre is Indie rock. A very "now" kind of sound.
    Interpol/Bloc Party

As for subject matter, we're open to ideas. we'd like quite a serious vibe not a kind of funny/take the piss.

We prefer the idea of artwork over photography for the sleeve, however a good photo is a good photo.

I'm not farmiliar with the complexities of the project so am not sure what DPI should be (or what DPI means for that matter!)

Also, I was toying with the idea of sticking to black and white. Though it might be a bit cliche tho. I'm sure whoever is dsiging it will have their own opinion on that.

Right, heres some cool stuff i found on the web in about 10 seconds.
Dont read to much into these. feel free to ignore/be inspired by these.

    hey posters,
i dont know what ye do, but ye're attempts seem only ok.

    heres a bit of advice,
first the name of the band "invocation"
as in to invoke something, a feeling, well from the track names
the feeling im getting is love, however, i could be wrong.
but when it comes to music, the actual music draws on emotions, so really the main poster should have an mp3 or similar up here to inspire everyone.

when it comes to design, you have to read between the lines.

now what imagery pops into you head when you think of evoking emotion?
well for me hilter as bad as he was could raise emotions and feelings,
now for love, love draws on a whole bucket of emotions, tears, facial expression, the whole shebang.

i'd advise a revision of ye're designs. and also note that the trend in design these days is towards hand rendered imagery and typography, so draw and scan, it'll look better, use watercolours, crayons, look deeper than the drawings, textures can raise emotions too.
at the moment i have exams so not to be the guy who doesn't practice what he preaches, i'll post my attempt in a week or two.

for black and white imagery which also might inspire you should search for "aubrey beardsley" some of his stuff was a bit out there but the resourse imagery the op gave instantly brought his stuff to mind.

Thought it might be an idea to put up some graphic work, since others were doing the same.

Shall work out a strategy for posting to appropriate threads in time.
