Is Google handing out @googlemail.com addresses for people in Ireland? Their FAQ says UK, but I just tried to create a new account and it offered me googlemail, yuck. Is this something to do with me, or are they just really bad at geography?

Nope, but last time I did an IP locate it told me Belfast. Is IP all google goes by for location?

Yes. Google don't ask for location information for their profiles.

Something like this. Of course, the IP is going to be mapped to where your ISP connects you to the outside world, so don't expect it to pin point your house or anything. For example, mine says Limerick.

They do now. I got a list of countries, selected Ireland, and still ended up being @googlemail.
    Where did you see this?

It doesn't matter anyway, sending mail to username@gmail.com will still deliver it to your mailbox.

My IP location says Dublin. I'd say that is reasonable enough seen as I am a 45 minute drive to Dublin :)

so does the company that owns "gmail" in the UK also own copyright over Ireland, or are Google just being a bit lazy?

No, its just people whose IP addresses map to UK locations geographically. Google thinks you're in the UK so presents you with Googlemail.
