I opened up a paypal account the other day as I wanted to get the other half a new IPod off Ebay.Tonight when I went to add my credit card detail's to my new PayPal account it tells me the card is already registered to another account.A quick phone call to Paypal and the girl tells me I had an account a couple of years ago from a different email address, which I did I had forgotten all about the old Paypal account.

Fine,I went on to ask her if she could close the old account as I no longer have access to the email address. In fact I cant even remember the old address, she could only tell me it ended in .dol which was no help as it must have been 3/4 maybe 5 years ago.Now I cant use my credit card with my new Paypal address and I cant close my old paypal account.I have won the auction and need to send of the payment soon.Any ideas...?

It does not accept debit cards from Ireland AFAIK. Surely your creditcard would have changed in the last 3-5 years? I assume the number would be the same, but has the expiry date and security code not changed. I'm also sure that this is not the first time paypal have come acroos this. I would press them on it. You could always ask a mate to pay for it for you, and refund him/her.

Finally, I thought it was illegal for a company to hold onto your credit card details in this country? Could you make a request under the FOI? Once you recieve any information they have on computer record from you (i.e. your old email address) ask them in writing to change it as it is no longer valid. They would have to comply if it was under the FOI.

PayPal links tit to the number, AFAIK

Why would it be illegal? He willingly gave them the information to set up an account, which is still perfectly valid (it's not their fault he forgot the details).

Yea You would not be able to use same credit card for more than one account.
I had same problem few years ago and even closed that old account and still it didnt work.
Once your CC was used to open account -it can not be used for other accounts.
You need another CC with different number to open another one.
    Good luck.

just go to a bank and get a new card:p?

If you report the card as stolen/lost the bank will issue a new card with a ne number. You could then register this with paypal under a new account.... using an email address you can hang onto.

Because under Irish Law no websites are allowed to keep your credit card details on record, unless you specifically give them permission to do so. Whether you gave tht information willingly or not.

I'd love to see that law. I think you're mixing up some of the principles of Data Protection here.

They are allowed to retain data (and quite possibly required to - banks have to hold information for up to 7 years under money laundering legislation, whether it applies to PayPal or not I can't comfirm).

Data Protection regulations allow you to have information held about you on file to be corrected it if it's manifestly incorrect - which obviously the details of this guys card won't be.

No its a Bank of Ireland Visa.I don't really want to get a new card just to buy one item and I would not get a new card in time,I think I have 6 days left to pay for the Ipod.

I suppose you and Richard could set up a new Paypal forum ;-)

I ran into similar difficulties with paypal as I had registered an AIB o-card number. Ended up creating a new account with new card.

Your best chance might be to see if you can upgrade your card eg to Gold or platinum and then you'll get a new number (the old number will still be tied in so direct debits wont be fecked up before you get to change them).
