i'm looking around for some software that i can run to optimise my pc at run time for gaming (e.g. turning off unnecessary processs and optimising RAM allocation for gaming apps etc)

    i've come across GameXP
    http://www.theorica.net/gamexp.htm

but some of the reviews don't seem very encouraging.

    anyone know of anything else?

Such tweaks are unnecessary and wont net you anything actually worth while. If you have performance problems it is a hardware issue or bottleneck in the system.

It's been a long time since I last heard of the GameXP product but I'm pretty sure it's "Boost Speed" feature for graphics cards degrades the image quality in order to achieve its awesome extreme performance...

thanks 8t8, ya i assumed as much that Game Xp probably tinkers with the Windows GDI and since it really doesnt tell you what it's doing at any stage i'd be very uneasy about using it. I don't really like changes being made to my system unless I know what they are doing

this is just a handy thing to have, might not get your pc flying, but it does get some extra ram

go to download.com and look up freeramxp pro.

if nothing else, it ll tell you how much more ram you need to upgrade to

Memory optimizers... another myth program that prey on the unsuspecting, unfortunately most of the details in how WinXP's memory management works are so complex and difficult to explain that it allows this myth to be propagated.

But a good one and this came from a MS employee posting on Ars Technica is that Microsoft tests everything, every conceivable method of improving the memory management and if these programs actually did improve things they would be part of the OS but they aren't and wont be.

You can see some debunking on FreeRam XP Pro at this link.

that is a good article, but we are trying to free up ram for a purpose, not to just leave it sitting there. to clarify, i use this program to remove ram usage from needless background programmes, so that i can play high demand games on my laptop.

it's a placebo effect, it doesn't actually free up RAM, just shifts it about so it appears free
