I'm conducting a wee survey (a few polls) at the moment (see the various sticky threads).

In this one I'm asking: What brand of portable media player have you got?

    Simple question, really.

I've got two. One is a no-name brand 256mb player I got from Hong Kong, the other is a Venturer 40gig brick from Argos which is really nice (despite its ugly exterior). My partner has just traded up from a 20gig Zen Touch to a 30gig Applex iPod Video. Have to say I prefer anything that you can just copy and paste onto like a normal drive.

I've got an extremely retro 5 Gigabyte 1st generation iPod.

And I've recently gotten myself a 4 Gigabyte iPod Nano (Black)

I'm a Mac user, so it's really the most sensible choice for me.

Interesting to note that despite the ubiquity of the IPOD, on the poll it is relatively low down in the ratings. I believe that this is because most informed purchasers realise that the IPOD is overpriced vis a vis other players in terms of performance and functions.

The IPOD is not the leading product among those who know a thing or two about DAPs.

indeed. when i bought my zen i had a look around and found 6GIG iPods were around the same price range as a 20gig zen... no brainer on who won that round :D

I'e got an iRiver H320 and am perfectly happy with it, i is far superior to iPods, plays a multitude of formats and doesn't require and ridiculous software.

Interesting results. Quite suprised at creative being so far ahead (I wonder how many of those are Vision:M's) and also quite suprised that there aren't more iAudio owners.

Overpriced? I got mine by buying a bag of Walker's crisps and texting the code.:D I have to say that it works fine for me as all I wanted to do was put my own music on it.

I've got an RCA Lyra RD2780, cheap as hell and takes a normal 2.5" hard drive so its easy upgrade the space. Has output and input for a TV, so you can use it as a hard disk recorder too! Interface on it isn't great, but you get what you pay for.

I wonder would the results differ if posted in another forum such as after hours? Or on a Bebo forum if there was one:rolleyes: I'd imagine iPod would definitely be the most popular there.

I've han an iriver H320 for a year and I'm still smitten, especially with rockbox. I like that zen vision M though but am too poor and unwilling to cheat with another music player!

iRiver H10 20gb. Got a good deal on ebay.
Great features but a little bulky. I'm very happy with it.

I was suprised Apple aren't topping the poll

    250th post! My first milestone

Had a h320 meself and now have a vision:m. The creative is far superior when it comes to video but nothin can beat a rockboxed h320 for everythin else!

I've got the wee Sony NWA-1000, she's a beauty but the in-box software is ****e.

No doubt about it, use home made software for it ;)

Due to my incredible lack of luck with technology, having had both a 30GB iAudio X5L and a 30GB Cowon A2 go faulty, and due to the fact that I put the refunded money from my A2 to "good use" ... I am currently (sadly) the owner of NO MP3 PLAYER.

I was the (first... and only .. .so far) person who answered "None" in this poll.

    *sniff*

    Ah well!

I got an iPod recently and now I feel feckin stupid cos it can hold 15,000 tracks and when I downloaded all my CDs and pilfered songs, they only came to 1,220. I'm happy with that many and won't download stuff just cos it's there.....but when on earth do people who have 15,000 songs listen to them all?

takethebiscuit, it depends how you get "rip" your CD collection to MP3. Here is a guide to the best possible way. Looks like a lot of effort but actually only takes about 8 minutes to set up and you'll be getting perfect rips:)

I'm not sure if this will be a problem because you have an iPod, but sure RockBox is almost ready for that anyway;)

i love my mp3 player, couldn't be bothered with those apple ipod things, but sure each to their own. god bless mp3 players, for mine keeps me sane;)

Nah, no problem with ripping stuff.....the problem is I've got so much free space left on the damn iPod.

Vaio pocket 40gb, barely a quarter full but I've only got my "acquired" music on it...just haven't got the time to put my CD collection on there.
    Someday, someday...

That's right. I don't own one (at the moment) - simply because the last two I owned went faulty and I haven't gotten another one yet.

I sell them in work though so I've a decent knowledge of them.

The thing is are you ripping it at high quality, or 64kbps wma/128kbps mp3)? Rip em at lame ---alt-preset-standard. Gives VBR, generally ~170-180kbps, and its near perfect quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

    Incidentally... I use MP3 CBR 192Kbps for all CD's I rip.

    cowen iaudio X5L 20Gb
its a legend, it great for all formats (except feckin' m4a). i have curse of the ware rabbit on it and some south parks and a tonne of music. i would def recommend it the battery life is great and its a little toughie if your a dropper. ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Ruskie4Rent

I'm a dropper and i must say this thing is like a tank. The screen, and the lack of m4a are the only real drawbacks. The way the files aren't as organised as well as a zen or an ipod is only a slight annoyance. Other than that I have to say I love the thing. It's battery last ages and i'm not even close to filling it's 30g capacity.

I have an iPod. I bought it primarily because it's the only MP3 player with a decent car interface, or indeed a decent interface of any kind. It's also a hell of a lot slicker than anything I've seen from any other manufacturer, and that accounts for something too. I didn't compare prices but it seems to me that a 30GB player with video costs around €300 no matter the make, so why bother with the inferior clones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

I have a Cowon A2 39GB myself and love it to bits. Play's everything flawlessly and never had any problems with it. My missus has an iPod video 30GB. The less said about that, the better!

yes but you can't use ID tags with the Cowan players, nor play DRM tracks, as far as i know, both of which are large disadvantages to that range of players.

Meh. I've had players with and without id3 support and when I had the option I chose not to use it. It does seem a bit stupid though that Cowan still haven't implemented it yet.
I sure as hell couldn't give a shít about DRM though. iAudio are one of the only proper UMS DAP's left. They all seem to be shifting to this MTP "play for sure" shíte.

I don't particularly support DRM myself but without having some sort of support for it on the player, then you can't use online stores. So the Cowan can't play music from online stores basically... and it can't do the whole group by genre stuff either.. so, irrespective of whther you use online stores or ID tags, it is just two areas where the Cowan players are not giving people the widest range of options. (I liked the X5 a lot but in the end choose not to get one for those reasons). But I do agree that they are still very good DAPs.
