Im looking for a way to filter traffic from IMs using linux - an open source solution would be preferable. I dont really want to just block all IM activity, more like scan and filter it to stop worms/viruses spreading through IM.

    Any Ideas ?

The main options i can see is using IP Tables and setting all the rules your self, their is a nice script called Shorewall which can help you with this.
Other options include Zone Lab's IM Secure ( $20 per year )
or the Barracuda IM Firewall which i dont even want to know how much it would cost :)

Well I have an IP tables scripts running as a firewall, but this cant examine the IM traffice and say, remove worms/viruses. I dont want to block IM traffic (which will use http if its normal ports are blocked anyway) just ensure that its not a big gaping security hole.

The IM packages youve suggest are more what Im after - but I need something that will run on a gateway machine, not just a client pc
