    Try restoring on another computer.
Most likely, the Hard Disk is buggered. Get it repaired or buy a new player.
    Repairs: Apple or mactivate.ie

Try resetting the iPod itself. Hold down the menu and the select button (the one in the middle of the scroll wheel) together for a few seconds until the screen changes. It mightn't make any difference, but worth a go.

Same happened to mine. According to the support page, it means your hard drive is not being found/corrupted. If you look at the apple support page, they suggest trying to reset it(using itunes, not restarting it) but if it's not being detected by the computer, all you can do is bring it back and get it replaced, which they should do.
I got mine replaced. The new one is now giving me a folder error  I'm starting to wonder if they're useless.

my one bit the dust also, my ipod wasnt being read by the computer (coudlnt "mount it" hee hee), couldnt run ipod restore, and it wiped all my songs, but still showed that 17 gigs were being used.. then i got it sorted by doing a qucik format of the drive on another computer, then running restore on ipod updater, and it started updating the songs...

so i left it alone, came back ten minutes later, had an error message and only one song added.. i had to refrain from throwing it against the wall..

so another reset and restore, but this time i unchecked the "update my songs automatically", so i added a few playlists manually and it seemed to do the trick.. havent tried to add my whole library yet though..
