I have a Dell Laptop with Windows XP and have happily been playing DVDs on it for two yrs, however, recently it won't seem to play them. I am getting a message saying "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." Now my sister has confessed that in an attempt to free disk space on said laptop she may or may not have erased something but is not 100%.....how do I get it playing DVD's again...is there something I can download?? Would rather not spend a fortune! Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Can you remember what your DVD player was called , was it powerDVD , or WinDVD ?
Do you still have driver disks for your laptop , it may well be on one of those ,
Does your laptop have any kind of recovery software , not sure if a winXP restore might work , try that ?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm off to investigate! Think it was winDVD, just was on it when I got it from Dell I think.

System restore only goes back 2 days as far as I can see and that's not enough time.

I had similar problem with my Dell Laptop & I had to re-instal the Cyberlink Power Dvd software from one of the dics I got with the machine.

You should try this as it fixed my machine.:D

Dell machines are shipping with PowerDVD at the moment.

The DVD decoder has been deleted thats all, simple to fix, just reinstall the DVD software (any one of them, doesn't matter) and you'll get the ability to play DVDs back...
