Should be in Films / Consumer Issues probably.

Whatcha mean one day before release? You are aware that new releases in DVD's / CD's typically come out here on a Friday as compared to Monday in the UK / Ireland.

For example, films out tomorrow (10 April) would be in Xtra-Vision (etc) from last Friday.

Not sure exactly why.. read somewhere why before.

And as for the plastic wrapper, you should have asked for one in a plastic wrapper as they usually have (but not always) them in plastic wrappers as soon as you bring the display copy to the counter and purchase.

No problem.. think i read before the reason CD's are released here on Friday's is because our chart is broadcast on a Friday... could be very wrong though!

I remember my local Xtra Vision were selling Revenge of the Sith weeks before it was due out....its happened quite frequently actually with different movies.

Thats the usual with xtra-vision films that are due for release on a Monday will usually be on the shelf on the Friday , Chartbusters are at it as well

The music chart runs from Friday to friday in ireland and so does the dvd chart.

Releases that are dated for a monday in the UK are on sale here quite legally from the Previous Friday.

There's a shop in town (along the quays) I won't say which one. That does put out the dvd's 1 or 2 days before its release on the friday.

i can tell you why, as a former XV employee...

our store got all our stuff (dvd's, games, etc.) on a thursday. now, naturally you can't leave stuff lying around, so you'd have 3 or 4 people working all day to sticker the stuff up and put it onto the system.

then come friday/saturday/sunday, if there's 2 or 3 of you during the day with no senior staff and you see a pile of stickered up dvd's for sale there and you've nothing else to do, your natural inclination is to stick it out on the shelves. most staff don't have a clue about the release dates... there is a list but it tends to get lost in the rush to get prices etc.

as for the plastic wrapped, XV operates by putting 2 or 3 cases on the shelf (taking the discs out etc.).. when you buy said dvd, if there's a case in the back with dvd inside, you'll get that, if not.. you'll get the case from the shelf with the disc that was taken out previously

    (long-winded explination, sorry)

As a current XV employee I can add to that, as per release dates, new realeases are realeased on mondays and breaking these dates can result in a hefty fine. Yet the only one that can be fined is the first establishment to do it so its a kind of a unpoliceable law. e.g there is a small independant music/dvd store across the road from our store so when say king kong which should of been released last monday, we got word this independant shop had broken the release date and were selling it on the friday therefore having an unfair and illegal advantage over the competition so one of the staff goes over and buys a copy which the shop pays for and get a reciept so we can prove that they broke the release date. we are then free to sell and rent our copys, as you can imagine if the release date doesnt brake you have a huge title like king kong sitting behind the counter all weekend not making money so head office turns a blind eye to breaking release dates.

Once one shops breaks they ring around and before you know it every store has the title out on the shelves.
