Top pair good kicker for all your chips

Playing the GJP Irish Open satellite today, and I've just been moved to a new table. I've just recently doubled up to 26k with average at 15k, and we're down to the last 18 with 3 tickets.

So, it's the first hand at the table and I get dealt KQ off in the bb, blinds are 400 800. Smurph raises to 2k, and the only guy at the table who can cover me flat calls. Then a short stack moves in for 3k, and it's my turn to act. I know Smurph and big stack can't rraise, so I decide to call the extra 2.2k to see if I can flop something. Smurph and unknown chip leader call too. Flop comes K 7 8 rainbow. I bet out 3k. I know this is too little, but it was kind of to put Smurph all in, that's all she had left, I wasn't really thinking about the other guy in the pot stupidly enough. Smurph folds anyway, and it's back to this guy who has a mountain of chips, and is the only player at the table who has me covered. He goes all in. I have absolutely no reads on the player, it's my first hand at the table. WTF do I do???

Tough one, I assume with AK he is reraising preflop - other than that the only hand that he is likely to have that beats you is 777 or 888, there are much more comnbinations of kings that you do beat. Against someone who wasnt a moron Id fold, he cant be bluffing and your hand isnt that strong. Against an unknown id probably make a judgement call based on the average standard.

I think folding preflop might be better than calling, and going all in would definitely rule if there was any chance smurph would fold.

I think a set would play it a bit slower unless villain is bad. You still have 20k behind, he has you covered.
    Either KQ/KJ/or 78s or something.

Yeah, I didn't play the hand particularly well. I thought with a player all in I'd get to see maybe 5 cards if nobody improved, and I was getting pretty good value for money. I would have folded if it could have been left open for a reraise. The 3k bet on the flop was really stupid, it was one of those things that you do sometimes without thinking about it at all, I just picked up 3k and threw it in without thinking about the size of the pot or anything.

His all in at the time seemed like an overbet, but considering the size of the pot it wasn't really. There's 15k in there after my 3k bet.

After meeting the player and now knowing how he plays and talking to him after, it would have been a automatic call, but without knowledge, I would have fold preflop with all that action in front of you, calling can only get you into trouble.

After the flop, I can understand your bet, but his action was a also correct to protect his hand, but he didnt give your hand any respect. In the end he dominate the final table and won his ticket, but it was some of the worse play I've ever seen by a player, in general, he played the man and not the cards and I think he had no idea of odds etc.

I also think I was ahead that time he put me in Dave, I ask him after and he refused to say.

But you played brilliant to comeback from 2k and get back to 60k, you had Mike emotions all over the place.lol

Did you win a ticket in the end Dave? I think this hand has got you into a tough spot but I'm leaning towards a call. I'm gonna try the $99 rebuy thing on PPP tonight so hopefully I'll see you at the Open.

The fold was a good move as this player was the sort to play 78 suit and ns and he would limp into pots with 77/88 and than he would raise with hands like kj etc, so the fold was fine and more times than enough correct.

Yeah I folded and he had KJ. I was sick. I was just about to put the chips in but I really didn't have a clue where I stood, and it would have just been gambling. I had absolutely no reads on the player, and couldn't rule out AK. Alot of players I find in these tournaments play it quite passively after hearing I don't know how many tv commentators saying that it is overplayed. Also I thought even K7 or K8 could be a possibility in one of these tournaments, you just never know. I didn't think he'd make a move with KT or lower without hitting two pair. Ultimately I decided that in general when you don't have a clue folding is the best option, especially considering I was still in fine shape with a fold.

I think he played the hand terribly. I was the only player at the table who could damage him, and there was a player all in so there was very little chance that I was bluffing. I wasn't playing particularly well yesterday, and I think that most of the time I would have called. It put me on tilt majorly but I got back in to it at the end of the day. Eventually came 6th when my stop and go move with 44 ran into K9 on a K high board.

with hindsight Dave, he used that all in move anytime he was in trouble or when he had top pair, he over-rated a lot of hands.

Yeah I didn't have any idea of how he played when I played this KQ hand. If I'd been at the table for 5 minutes I definitely would have called, without a shadow of a doubt. Congrats on the ticket Ollie, WP!

I played in that hand with AQ off suit, I was so short stacked that I needed to connect with a flop to move all in. It was the first time in my life that I was so tempted to scream at the top of my voice call. It was written all over my face. This guy reckoned that any two pair against eachother is a 50 50 shot. ie. AA V 22 50/50 AA V 33 50/50. He also reckoned that waiting for "good cards" was a terrible waste of time and no way to play texas holdem. At the end of the day, he is playing in the Irish Open and im not. Ah well, theres always next year:( :(:(

Lol yeah, I should have tried to get some info off you and smurf! UL not to get a ticket, you were playing really well. He actually ended up selling his ticket for €2k to Mike so there'll be not betting on him Rob!
