i know this is kind of vague, but i'm thinking of going to the states for 4 weeks this summer on a sort of mini tour. i've no idea where to start looking so i've come here for ideas on what states would be worth visiting. we're students if that helps.

i'd appreciate if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on the kind of money i'd need to bring to cover accommodation, food, travelling and general drunken messiness while there.

    thanks

A mate went on a tour from Chicago to San Francisco with Trek America a few years ago and reckoned it's the best holiday he's ever been on. Even if you don't go with them, you might get some ideas of routes from the tours they do.

I goin on a 2 week trip myself there pretty soon. im goin from nyc to boston, over to ohio, down to washington and back to nyc. travelling by car since i know someone there. I've been to nyc before. actually the last time i was there was sept 2001. the way i see it, the u.s. needs to bee done in stages. e.g - the north east/ new england. florida/deep south. california, nevada desert. and the north west. Your 4 week trip should take you nicely around one of these regions. As for accommodation prices, you should go to www.hostels.com . I've found that the average hostel stay is around €30 . which is cheap compared to ireland. And like the previous poster suggested, you could travel via a trip america tour, although i think they're quite expensive. if you want a more spontaneous style trip you might want to check out www.greyhound.com to get a price on their pass. that way you can just hop on a bus and go where you like.

One thing about the states is that their is LOADS of info on the web about every aspect of the country. i think if you do some serious research you can come up with a good plan. have a good one.

Are you going to rent a car? Make sure if you dont you figure out the public transport in each city. Most cities in the states have very good public transport, cheap and easy to get around. Have fun now.

www.greentortoise.com do great tours, and they go to the burning man festival as well (look it up if you dont know what it is). Basically you eat, sleep and travel on the bus. Its cheap and cheerful.
