Right, i might be able to get one of these for about €60. Am a n00b so don't know whether it is decent or not.

My PC is crappy! Pure CRAP! I have got some RAM to bring it up to 512SDRAM, i was wondering, is this gfx card any good? I want to play Counterstrike Source. Will this card run it?

Is this a 256mb card as i am being told?

What games will it run? I know it is better than what i got atm, Radeon 7000:p

I don't have enough money for a new pc but wanna play games, so, i need to upgrade this slowly.

    Thanks for help.

It'd be a good budget card, but thats all it is. It'll play Doom3 on 800x600 with shadows and extra stuff off. It should handle CS source alright.

I may be wrong, but i think some of the 128meg versions are better than some of the 256meg versions as they have faster cores and whatnot.

i currently have a 9600xt 128meg, and it can play half life 2 fine. im sure a 256meg pro will have no problem.

    So, it is worth buying?

Well what do you really need it for?
If it runs the games you want then, yes.
It may run them on low specs.
If you want it to run them on higher specs, get a better one.

I want to be able to play games such as:

    Counter Strike Source
    Battlefield
    WOW

    etc etc.

Currently i can play..none. Apart from Counterstrike 1.6
I don't want to have to play all games at a really low spec but medium would be grand. Also, i have a dire celeron 1ghz processor. is there any point getting this gfx card when i have such a bad processor? Like, will the games still work regardless of my dire processor.

for €60 u can't really go wrong for an aging system like that. The other option is really to buy a whole new pc.

You're gonna be cpu limited anyway, but the gfx will be quite a good match for that system, as its dx9 capable at least (the 7000 isn't).

I was thinking about getting a new processor aswell. Amd Athlon 2100+.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭B00MSTICK

They're both fairly old parts unfortunatley and CSS is pretty CPU heavy, whats your current CPU? Keep an eye out on the F/S forum you might nab a 6600GT for ~ €100. eBay might be a good option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Current CPU = Celeron 1ghz. Pure CRAP!

Amd 2100+ is quite good isnt it?

Also, maybe an nVidia 5900 XT. This card any good?

LOL, well, I have...€85 now. I am trying to sell stuff. But €85 now.

    Terrible i know but..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭B00MSTICK

The 9600 and 2100+ would have been considered mid range a year or more ago but I agree that celeron is absolute muck, maybe try go for a 3200+/2800+ Barton. Are you sure your mobo can support AMD chips? If you have an Celeron in there isnt it a Socket 370 or do you have another mobo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

    Um...*confused*

I don't have a clue. Anywhere i can find the make of my mobo? I have asked this question on these boards before i know..sorry.

I have Belarc Advisor. if i run it, will it tell me what my mobo is? then i can post here and someone can advise me then.

b00mstick, don't lie and tell me that mine won't support AMD just because you want that AMD Athlon 2100+ in the thread we are both bidding in. :D

    Only jokin. :D

Damn you found me out ;)

Download CPUZ from www.cpuid.com it should tell you alot about your set up.

Im 99.9% sure your mobo is a Socket 370/478 whereas an AMD Barton/Thoroughbred/Palamino is a Socket A

You better check to make sure though.

    Right, done.

Now, i go to mainboard? Then take screenshot and post here.

    yessum?

Do not get the 9600. It's an older card yes, but its not old enough to waste on a 1ghz celeron. :)

You will not be able to play CS:S without a new processor...

The 9600 still holds up okay though. I put a 9600xt in my girlfriends computer awhile ago - and even though its better then the pro model you mention it runs Bf2 on 1024x768 with options on medium - still looks pretty enough to play!

The 5900xt is also an okay-ish card but again, would be a waste on a 1ghz celeron.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

ugh, even if you change the mobo and grab a faster chip, you will still have to buy DDR memory and more than likely get a new powersupply. At that stage, you are better off waiting for somthing to come up on the FS forum.

The 9600 (im assuming its a pro or XT) is worth 60 alright, but its a waste in your system TBH.

I think with the 1ghz celeron (S378) machine you have, you would be throwing money down the drain for gaming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Ah, thanks everyone. there is a pc in FS for €130. I am thinking bout getting it. Intel Pentium 4 1.5ghz. This is pretty good ain't it?

The problem is, i don't have a car being 14 and all. And i have a very small budget. I always miss out on the good stuff.

I found out last night about my mobo.crapness of it. :(

I now know i am better off buying a new pc than trying to upgrade this. :(

When you say you can hold it for me. You couldn't hold it for about 2 months could you?

    :D

Well, tbh, I can't see myself getting the money soon. I have €85 now, get about €20 a week. Other money coming in doesnt look to positive. My birthday isn't until July. I don't have a job as i am 14.
I have been trying to sell some stuff on boards for ages now. And i wouldn't be able to install this stuff myself. I can't see myslef being able to gather this money at all really in the near future.

Thanks anyway though, i appreciate the offer.

EDIT - I was thinking, maybe if I just got everything but the gfx card. that would bring down the price quite a bit. I could get enough for that quite soon and then save up for a different gfx card.

    What do you think?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I wouldn't get that 1.5ghz - it's a fine system for playing older games, and it WILL run CS:Source, but it won't even play certain new games like Battlefield 2, Oblivion, etc, at all regardless of what gfx you put into it...

Maybe for your birthday just ask for a new PC, or some money towards buying a decent second hand one - Kdjacs price might be tempting (:p ) but if you don't know much about computers you're playing a risky game trying to piece it together by yourself without the proper know how.

edit: If all you actually want to play is CS:Source the 1.5 P4, if you throw in a half decent gfx card (the 9600 you mentioned would be grand) and bring the ram to 512 or more total, should be okay for just that. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

If i get KdjaC's mobo/processor/ram then i could get someone to install it for me.

Why would it be risky? (genuine question, not trying to be smart)

Oh no, its not risky at all if someone who knows how to do it, does it - what I meant was like with anything with this nature, its a bad idea to try and do something you don't know alot about. Computer parts can be damaged very easily...and it's amazing JUST how easily you bork something up when you're not 100% sure of what you're doing. (painful experience, although luckily I've never botched anything other then old Pentium I's up tinkering around)

If you upgrade you'll probably also need other new parts as well as the mobo/ram/gfx, like a new psu...don't forget :)

PSU? is that not a processor? Which i am getting. I think.

    2400XP @2.4 €30
    1.5GB ram €100
Abit kv7 mobo (built in everything) €30

Thats a cpu, ram and mobo.

    What's psu?

PSU is Power Supply a 300 watt would suffice for the above but if you took the GFX card you would need a 400 watt or higher.

You should have a 200 to 300 watt in your pc now.

Read the label on the back to find out, its possible you may nee d anew one to be compatible with the KV7 AMD board.
