Lets first check for the PC speaker
If Windows open a command prompt
    Type ECHO <ctrl>G
This will appear as ECHO ^G. Press <return>
    Do you get a beep?
If not turn the machine off. Hold down a key on the keyboard and power on to generate an error. Any beeps?

Second let's check device manager. List here everything under Sound, Video and game controllers and describe the symbols to the left, any x's explanation marks, minuses, etc

Third try headphones instead of (powered?) speakers.

Forth, use the sound and audio devices icon in the control panel audio tab to select the correct playback device.

Next test the speakers by plugging into a radio or similar

Returning to the PC get analogue audio working before attempting digital, disconnecting digital (2 wire or optic) cables and ensuring digital audio is not selected in Volume Mixer Advanced
