Do RTE and TG4 actually have rights for bought in programmes and sports events for Northern Ireland since theyre transmitted to NI $ky/NTL subscribers and (In TG4's case) relayed from Divis not to mention all those high powered transmitters located near the border obviously targetted at NI

considering some shows/events get blocked i would say yes they do own the rights

NTL in Belfast used to block Home and Away on RTÉ TWO, because Channel 5 wanted it blocked. Not sure if that is still the case.

i do believe that five is now ahead of RTÉ so maybe they dont

How come programmes are blocked on TG4 on Sky, but can still be shown on analogue from Belfast? Surely they have the rights to show them in NI or they wouldn't be able to broadcast on analogue in the first place in Belfast. Not easy or even possible to block out certain programmes on analogue is it?

Do C4 and five own rights to many of the shows that are broadcast in the Republic?

C4 has been broadcasting for year in the Republic surely during some of that time they did hold the rights to certain shows.

I don't know why five would worry about Home and Away being shown first on RTE TWO in the North I am sure that the north isn't where five make most of their money. or any channel for that matter. or any show.

RTE and TG4 buy All Ireland Rights for GAA matches. BBC NI lost out to RTE for some of the matches last year I think.

I wouldn't say they have international sporting rights but RTE will be broadcasting the UFAE champions league on the internet during the next few seasons.

i remember they made quite a big song and dance about it. there was even mumblings about trying to block the RTÉ signal from passing over the border IIRC :D

    TG4 blocked on Sky!

Why? It can only be got in NI part of UK, which has it from 3 RTE transmitters, NTL cable and Divis local TX.

TG4 uniquely among Irish TV is supposed to be available in all N.I.

It may be more to do with ROI Satellite coverage and Setanta rather and anything to do with N.I., i.e. TG4 only having Terrestrial rights for some sport.

Don't forget the Sky Irish TV is NOT part of the Broadcasters program feeds, as BBC, ITV, C4 and Five is. RTE/TG4 on Sky (even in ROI) is solely part of Sky's commercial Pay TV, just as C4 is on NTL/Chorus cable in ROI.

I'm not sure what deal TV3 has with Sky, but I'd be surprised if much different to RTE. Though significant it is not on N.I. Sub card. (no loss for them)

Dunno why C5 kicked up so much fuss about Home and Away Its not as if its even a good programme

    More than Three
Claremont, Cairnhill, Truskmore, Monaghan, Carlingford, Holywell Hill, Kippure and numerous Donegal relays all provide RTE to various parts of NI
In most cases this can be dismissed as unintentional overspill although its a bit of a streach to use that term for either Claremont or Holywell
TG4 uniquely among Irish TV is supposed to be available in all N.I.

    Not exactly
There is a provision in the Good Grief Disagreement to
    explore urgently with the relevant British authorities, and in co-operation with the Irish broadcasting authorities, the scope for achieving more widespread availability of Teilifis na Gaeilige in Northern Ireland;
It doesnt actually say they HAVE to make TnaG ** available they just have to explore the possibility of doing same

    In any case
    1) Even the Beeb dont get 100% terrestrial coverage
    2) TG4 is available throughout NI on satellite (albeit on a subscription basis  )

And if thought THAT was nit-picky what about this :D
** it says TnaG not TG4
