Just like to know if anyone out there is contracting in IT at the moment in Ireland and how difficult it is to get contract jobs out there right now? I'm specifically interested in contract work relating to Software Testing and the current market rate for someone who has 5 years test experience...

    MonkeyWrench:

Do you have experience testing in any specific areas (eg, Insurance, Banking, Telecoms, etc.)? Do you have analysis/team lead experience? These may help boost your rate.

Generally speaking, as a s/w tester you could expect to get a daily rate of between €250 & €350.

What sort of gig are you looking for?

    Focus on technologies.
Break your skills down by skill and look on recruit ireland and Irish jobs.
Break skills down by keyword and do the same
Get your CV out to Agencies they should be persecuting you otherwise there is no point trying to go contracting.
In genera 3 moths ago 5 I would have advised testers against contracting rates are not high enough realtive to salaries. If the situation has changed since then I'd be surprised.

I'm currently working in the UK for a software company which mostly deals with Oil and Gas applications. I have previous experience of Insurance, Telecoms and Finance apps. I'm trying to get an indication of the rates available in Ireland and if it is worth contracting ahead of permanent jobs. In the UK the rates are around 250 to 300 pounds stirling per day but its quite difficult to get into the contract market here at the moment...

I forgot to say, if you have a 5 years under your belt as a proven tester - Don't take any crap from agencies about starting you off on a lower rate because its your first contract, blah, blah.

I've been contracting for almost 10 years in the test arena (makes it sound gladiatorial & somewhat exciting - which it ain't) at all levels. If you need any advice - drop me a line. (See also private message I sent you.)
