I own a Sony Vaio laptop and have had this warning for the last few weeks
-- SMART Failure Predicted on Jard Disc 0 - ( details of disc)
--Warning Immediately back up your data and replace hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent

    Press F1 to continue.

So I backed up my data and sure enough, it loads up for about 15 seconds, goes into physical memory dump and restarts.

Is my only option to replace the hard disc?

Moved my 'Wanted' to the wanted section.

You could try Spin Rite (€) or similar...but, TBH, it's most likely gone (Unless you want to go opening up the HDD and replacing parts and wasting time and money...)

SMART did it's job. You saved your data.

I'm assuming that the warranty's expired, otherwise you wouldn't be looking for info. but just on the off-chance (That you think you did something wrong, etc.) - if it is warranty, ring the VAIO Link and they'll pick up your machine for a HDD replacement without further Q's. How old is the laptop? Has it been registered?

Thanks for your swift help and my laptop is no longer under warranty unfortunately. I will replace the hard drive at work as one of my colleagues is a bit of a wizz with replacing stuff.

    Thanks again:o
