i hate txt speak, my parents use it and think they are smart, then they wonder why i always have to ring them back to see what they really said

Text speak is a bannable offence on many boards here on boards.ie.... i wish it was enforced without prejudice.

Yeah it's really annoying to try to read, I don't see why some people feel the need to stick in random numbers and spell things wrong when it would be just as easy to do it proplerly.

I think text speak derived from the whole 1337 5p33k (leet speak) thing that happened in america when people thought they were hacked if they used words like HaXX0r5(Hackers) or 1 am 1337, (I am elite). As I can see it is probably a little better than txt spk but it all is bull**** to make you seem cool. I personally wish both would burn in hell.

I'm scared - I could read what jester said :(

Anyways, yes I hate txt spk a lot, and I never use it in my text messages, unless I run out of room, then I'll shorten a few words down...

I also hate text speak. If I ever catch my niece or nephew using it I will kick their ass.

I always wonder why people use "text speak"! It's actually more difficult to write an SMS this way and takes much longer especially with predictive text and T9 now on most mobiles! If I was running a mobile operator business I would set up a filter to block all SMS with this lingo in it and return a message "Language not recognised, please use a spellchecker!" ... this would earn extra $$ as people would need to write proper SMS, but it would also mean they at least can write grammar properly!

Doesn't bother me but I will discriminate based on it.

Just like bad spelling, bad grammar or bad punctuation I'll automatically assume you are a bit simple if you have an abundance of txt spk in your writings.

    HO HO, you joker!

It doesn't bother me really, and with the speed boards runs at a few bytes shaved off a post can only be a good thing! ;)

Have you joined the spell czech forum. There are many other self-congratulary, pedantic people engaged in all sorts of one up manship and generally taking the whole thing way to seriously. Give it a try!

I think Text speak derived from the limit of 160 characters on text messages, back in the early days of mobile phones, not from l33t.
This only makes it more confusing to me, as you aren't limited to 160 characters on a forum, it's somewhere in the region of 60,000 characters [depending on the database and all that, but the point is you have LOADS of space], so why people bother to use it when they have no reason to is beyond me.

It's harder to read and write than using plain English, so I don't see why people tend to use it.
That said, the only people I've noticed using it have been young adolescents.
You should see some bebo profiles, they're a disgrace, not a word of plain English in it.
What I find f*cking thick though is they've now shortened short words such as "who" to "hu", I mean if you're too lazy to write three letters then there's something very wrong with you.

Though, it doesn't bother me on msn/aim/etc or via mobile texts, just when I come across it on forums/blogs/profile pages etc.

That's a handy translator allright, but I don't think I'd be bothered to unscramble someone else's gibberish. If they can't be bothered to write properly then why should you bother to read it?

I can read that no bother, but

Took a while to decipher, and even then I got some words wrong.

For those who use it in daily life, I don't think it is. This is the problem. It's become a (the?) primary written language for them and isn't going to go away any time soon :(
