Explorer - Failed to Initialize problem

My home PC (running XP) is giving this error message "Explorer.exe : The application failed to initialize properly" just after I log in and before the desktop loads properly. A CTRL ALT DEL will let me get to the task manager and run things from there and I can also boot in safe mode (so I got my data off it) but any ideas on what's wrong/how to fix.
My other half was using it at the time and remembers some message about "being infected" - I presume she means the PC ;)
I suspect spyware/adware but any ideas?
    Cheers

I'd assume spyware/virus infection, if you can get the removal tools installed then run them that is your best bet. Make sure the definitions are up to date also for those that support it schedule a boot scan so it scans the system before Windows log's on.

I had this problem before on my mother in laws computer. Its either a virus or a bunch of spyware. I had to boot to safe mode with networking, update the virus/spyware definations and clean the system. I also had to extract from a windows xp install disk via one of the cab files a new explorer.exe file.

Bingo, system was brand new after that.
