Spotted this on page 11 of todays Star newspaper. If you follow this link, and go to the Ice cream range, you'll see it in the top centre of their flavours.

According to the Star, this honest mistake was a take on some american drink and will be scrapped pretty soon. Just imagine if it'd been released here!

I'm afraid I dont see the problem with the name. Only a tiny minority of a tiny country would be offended by this.
I'm pretty sure its difficult to name anything without unknowingly offending someone somewhere.

I can understand it was an honest mistake. But just because it might not offend me or others, doesn't make it right, and i think they made the right choice in deciding to scrap it.

The drink it's based on is probably 'Black and Tan'. Go into an Irish bar in an area that doesn't have a large Irish ex-pat population and they openly advertise Black & Tan the way Miller etc would be advertised here.

It's a drink that's half Guinness and Bass.

Exactly, there's always gonna be somebody who's gonna take offence to the smallest things and start giving out, whether it was intended or not.

Is it not released here already, no? I know I've seen it before but can't remember if I saw it in a shop or on the net... hmmmm I'll have to ponder that

That concoction is in turn named after the state sponsored terrorists though.

I wouldn't say it's offensive, but it isn't exactly a good marketing maneuver.

A funny mistake I think is the point.

Come on, it's definitely an allusion to the Black and Tans. There is no way you'd describe the colour of Bass or Harp as being tan coloured.

True, last week I learned that some Irish pubs that aren't owned by Irish ex-pats have that exact drink. I will admit that I was shocked at first but now.......meh. (I'm a sad little man, I know)

The ice cream name is brilliant though.

EDIT: Oh my God, 'Cherry Garcia actually exists! <3 Ben & Jerry's.

Woah, I thought this one was just the name they gave it in England/Ireland.. but apparently this is its actual name..

Ahaha, the other one is priceless :D

Bah, the description of Dublin Mudslide on Ben&Jerry.ie
Irish eyes were most definitely smiling in May 2005 when Ben & Jerry’s launched Dublin Mudslide, a flavour Molly Malone herself would be proud to sell on her wheelbarrow! Available in our 6 Scoop Shops and also in pint-size (500ml) tubs, this delectable Dub contains Irish cream liqueur ice cream, big chunks of rich chocolate chocolate chip cookies and is blended with swirls of coffee fudge. It’s a flavour to die for!

I don't know if it's widely known but the original Black and Tans were wild hounds on the Limerick/Tipperary border. When the Black and Tan soldiers arrived here, their uniforms and savagery reminded people of the wild dogs and the nickname stuck.
