I was told by a friend that you dont need medical insurance in australia. He maintains that ireland and australia have an agreement that you will recieve free medical attention if needed, as in if you broke a leg they would treat ya, and that the insurance only covers you so you dont have to pay if you have to go the doctor? Does anyone know if its true or if hes talking crap.

He's not talking crap. There is a reciprocal agreement between Australia and Ireland. It covers emergencies, so if you have to go to Casualty then you're covered if you have an Irish passport.

    Info is here http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/ozhealth-visitors#reciprocal

So is it worth getting travel insurance for australia then at all, if you have free emergency care in public hospitals and the health insurance is not going to cover you for private hospitals why does everyone fork out for the insurance.

Well travel insurance will cover things like lost baggage, cancellations and also stuff like dental emergencies which wouldn't be covered normally.

    It's a judgement call I guess.
