    Hi All,
A bit of a weird request here.
We're using a particular type of server that sounds like a wind tunnel. Because its in a public area (no comms room) we have to try and mute the sound of it, but still leave ventilation slots as the machine has triple cooling fans.
I've seen these used years ago for dot matrix printers, but wondering if anyone knows where you might get something like this these days?
    many thanks

Have you got a rack to put them in?

Unfortunately if air has to get in and out, then sound's going to get out. Is it an IBM blade system? They're the noisiest feckers on the planet. Sun boxes are none too quiet either. A decent rack will help reduce the noise somewhat, but mostly servers like that are designed to be in their own room.

Indeed they are. I was trying to train people last year a few feet away from two of them (2*6 = 12 servers). Was a bit of a challenge alright :)

Have a look at Quiet PC they stock some sound proof cases for rackmount cabinets and midi towers.

If it is a standard tower PC then check out Zalmans TNN silent cases, quite expensive but it should be virtually silent as a result.

Khannie, its not in its own rack. It is a 4U rackmountable, but not in its own rack as yet. Its not a branded server as its an industrial class telephony server, but it really does make an incredible amount of noise!!

8T8, thanks for that link, I'll investigate that now. I found one company in the UK that makes cabinets, but a 24U is nearly £2000. For that money, I'll stand in front of the thing and sing to drown out the noise!!

Appreciate all the help, if I find a good solution, I'll post it up here. :D

Check the BIOS settings too in case there is a Quiet mode.

Also check the if the latest BIOS notes there are any noise settings ( I've seen this on some Inspirons )

If the case is rattling then put something on it to deaden the sound , like a a block of photocopier paper

If the office is hot try moving it to a cooler place as fan speed should depend on temp - on the laptop forum they mention some apps that can control/monitor fan speeds though you'd probably need manufacturer specific drivers.
