Three people have been killed in early morning car crashes in Galway and Cork.

A mother and her daughter died at around 6.00am when their car was hit by a trailer that became detached from a truck around five kilometres north of Galway city on the N17 to Tuam.

A number of diversions are in place while the emergency services attend the scene and a section of the road between Galway and Claregalway has been sealed off.

Earlier, a crash between a car and a truck in Co Cork left a man dead. The incident, which took place at Knockardandrum, Charleville on the Limerick to Cork Road took place at around 5.20am.

The man who died was the driver of the car.

A total of 107 people have been killed so far this year on Irish roads.
