Snooker struggling

Did you see Mathew Stephen declaring world snooker as a "shambles" at the monent due to the lack of sponsorship due to the loss of Benson & Hedges.
They don't have the sponsorship available to have enough tournaments on the world stage, 6 compared to something like 40 for golf. Therefore the world ranking are a bit of a lottery with so few events.
And the prize money is fairly small espically in places like China and Malta therefore I'd imagine that it would be difficult for professionals ranked 100 or so to make a living

I never realized the sport was in a fix like this. I actually thought it had become more popular over the last couple of years.

What was the story with the Benson & Hedges? Was that something to do with cigarette advertising or something?

Benson and Hedges used to sponsor both the Irish and Uk Masters but since the smoking ban there hasnt been a steady sponsor for them.

Embassy had an exemption until last year - but now thats gone too.

888.com and saga insurance are the main sponsors this year but how long will they last. And what about the rest of the tournaments like the Irish which was dropped last year due to no sponsor.

Theres a danger that more tournaments will be dropped.

I think snooker is popular among people who cant afford to invest in it - but sponsors dont get enough publicity from it so they couldnt be bothered.

Smoking suited it as it has always had a rep of drinkers and smokers - although that has now all changed too!

The Irish Masters actually had a sponsor this year, I think the HSE were sponsoring again along with another company. What happened was that the WSB scheduled the China Open for the same week as the Irish Masters, so the Masters was dropped from the calendar. Crazy carry on!

In fairness to snooker, the four major tournaments in the UK are heavily televised by the BBC (they've lost every other sport), so you'd think there would be good media exposure for any prospective sponsor.
