This thread is inspired by http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054913670

I'm wondering what the legality of such a site in Ireland would be? I can't imagine that such a broad bank of knowledge about a US (or any other) citizen, obtainable at the click of a mouse is the most desirable public policy situation...

    Any thoughts?

Data protection act to the rescue here I think. At the very least the act would entitle you to get yourself taken off it I guess?

However does anyone know the legal status of credit companies that get your details to give you a credit rating?

You give consent for them to do this when you take out a loan.

Is there such a backround check website in existance in relation to Irish citizens? I know in the US companies like choicepoint and lexis-nexis are pretty heavily involved in such, but the regulatory regime is very different there.

That's the most fucked up thing I've ever seen. That's at least as creepy as I am, if not a little bit more.

It has to be illegal over here because of the data protection act. I feel an email to the DPC coming on.
