Does anyone know if there is an organisation that visits people in hospital or where you can spend some time with older people (eg retirement home)? Sorry if this sounds strange - would only be able to do it 1/2 evenings a week.

you would want to check out that site volunteering ireland, i don't know if there's an official organisation but one or two of my friends who went into nursing used to do voluntary work in hospitals while in transition year so.

    maybe http://www.redcross.ie/news/review/2004/0304f.html and http://www.volunteeringireland.com/vi_opps.php?sort=1&cat=G

I think the SVP organises something like this. When my siter was in the National Rehabilitation hospiatl, there was a retired gentleman who use to come around once a week and chat to evrybody on the ward, spending more time with those who didnt have visitors that night. But I'm not sure if they do this in general hospitals, or only specialist hospitals where patients are admitted for longer periods. ;)

Children in Hospital Ireland http://www.childreninhospital.ie/ may be able to point you in the direction of a similar organisation for older people.

I did something like that for a few years with the St Vincent de Paul at the Royal Hospital, Donnybrook. Get in touch with the Royal Hospital or the SVP directly. Volunteering Ireland (as previously suggested) is another good option.

    Good luck!

For the last 5 years I have been visiting elderly people in St.Mary's Hosipital in the Phoenix Park. I've been doing it through a group called the Community of Sant'Egidio. It is a lay organisation consisting of about 20 people (ranging in ages from 18 up to 80).

We visit on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8 and then we all meet afterwards at St.Paul's Catholic church in Smithfield for prayer and a cup of tea.

If you are interested in knowing more please let me know.
